The requirements

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field (e.g., Psychology, Education Psychology, or other relevant discipline), with training or experience in Special Educational Needs or inclusive education.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Special Education, Inclusive Education, or a closely related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in teaching and/or supporting students with diverse learning needs within a mainstream or inclusive education setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and delivering interventions for students with special educational needs, including literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional or behavioural needs.
  • Experience in assessing learners’ needs and developing, implementing, and monitoring Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or equivalent support plans.
  • Proven experience working collaboratively with teachers, parents, and external professionals to support student progress and inclusion.
  • Experience in coordinating learning support provision within a school, department, or structured programme, including contributing to staff guidance or professional development.

Skills

  • High level of digital literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, email systems, and digital tools for data management, reporting, and student tracking.
  • Strong understanding of assessment practices and tools used to identify and support a wide range of special educational needs. Certification or formal training in specialist assessment tools is an advantage.
  • Ability to assess and develop appropriate support strategies for learners with diverse needs, including literacy and numeracy difficulties (e.g. dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia), attention and executive function challenges (e.g. ADHD), sensory or physical impairments, and social, emotional, behavioural, and developmental conditions (including autism).
  • Strong understanding of examination board and national assessment requirements (e.g. UNEB, Cambridge, IB), particularly in relation to access arrangements and examination accommodations for learners with special educational needs.
  • Ability to design, implement, and maintain effective digital systems for tracking student progress, interventions, and outcomes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear reports and communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers, and external professionals.
  • High levels of empathy, patience, and interpersonal sensitivity, with the ability to build trusting relationships with learners and families

The position

The Learning Support Coordinator (LSC) is responsible for leading, coordinating, and continually developing support provision for students with diverse learning needs. Working in close partnership with teachers, parents, external professionals, and students, the Coordinator will champion inclusive education, promote equitable access to the curriculum, and drive improvements that enable every learner to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

He/She will be responsible for:
Identification and Support of Learners

  • Maintain an active caseload of students and provide direct assessment, intervention, and progress monitoring for students with diverse learning needs.
  • Identify and assess students’ learning needs through screening, data analysis, teacher and parent referrals, observations, and formal and informal assessments.
  • Distinguish between students requiring short-term remedial support and those with identified or emerging special educational needs.
  • Identify and assess a wide range of learning needs, including literacy and numeracy difficulties (such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia), developmental and cognitive challenges, physical and neurological impairments, and social, emotional, and behavioural difficulties.

Resource Management

  • Lead the organisation and effective use of learning materials, assistive technologies, and physical resources within the Learning Support Unit to ensure accessibility and suitability for all learners.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with external specialists and service providers to support the assessment and intervention needs of students whose needs cannot be fully assessed or supported within the school.

Monitoring and Documentation

  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date records of student assessments, interventions, progress, and support plans.
  • Document parent meetings, support sessions, reviews, and programme adjustments to ensure continuity and accountability.
  • Manage documentation related to Learning Support enrolment and parent agreements, and monitor adherence to agreed support arrangements.

Parent and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build strong partnerships with parents by maintaining regular communication regarding student progress, support strategies, and next steps.
  • Facilitate parent involvement in goal-setting, review meetings, and decision-making processes to strengthen student outcomes and home-school collaboration.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for parents, teachers, school leaders, and external professionals regarding student support and inclusion matters.

Team Coordination, Collaboration, and Professional Development

  • Work collaboratively with teachers and school leadership to strengthen inclusive practices and ensure effective support for diverse learners across the school.
  • Design and deliver professional learning opportunities that build staff capacity in differentiation, inclusive teaching practices, and learning support strategies.
  • Support teachers in the effective use of digital tools and systems for monitoring, documenting, and referring students with special educational needs.

Compliance and Reporting

  • Ensure compliance with school policies and relevant regulations relating to inclusion, safeguarding, assessment, and special educational needs.
  • Liaise effectively with external professionals and agencies, ensuring that recommendations are appropriately implemented, monitored, and reviewed.
  • Prepare reports, summaries, and recommendations for school leadership, parents, and other stakeholders as required.
