Job Description

The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking Leaf Season Drivers for temporary seasonal employment for our fall leaf season collection services. These employees work in collaboration with our operations unit within the Solid Waste Bureau (SWB).

The Solid Waste Bureau provides an array of services, such as residential brush collection, roll-off operations, street sweeping, mulch deliveries, street litter can services, as well as supporting the County's leaf collection program and snow removal operations.

Specific duties include:

  • Driving straight trucks, left and right-side drive, using joystick to operate vacuum hose for the collection of leaves in residential neighborhoods;
  • Performing pre- and post-trip inspections of trucks;
  • Reading maps and using GPS navigation systems; and
  • Providing guidance and/or direction to helpers pertaining to the leaf collection process.

Work is generally performed outdoors and in all types of weather conditions and often near moving traffic. The work environment includes exposure to draft, noise, dust, grease, and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, stooping, and lifting light-to-heavy objects and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.

Minimum Requirements

  • Possession of a class B or A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL); and
  • Six months of experience driving large trucks and/ or other commercial vehicles of like magnitude.

Special Requirements

  • These positions require the availability to work overtime, up to 60 hours per week with overtime pay for hours over 40 per week.
  • Applicant must possess a valid Class “A” or “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Applicant must provide written consent for Arlington County to obtain from previous employer’s information required by DOT agency regulations concerning drug and alcohol testing information.
  • Prior to the time of appointment, the successful applicant must pass a pre-employment drug screening. The successful applicant will be subject to drug screening, at such times during employment, as required by federal, state and local standards and policies.
  • Requires learning and following all safety rules and regulations pertaining to job functions which includes attending all required safety classes and meetings in order to ensure a safe work environment and to ensure team members are practicing the required safety rules and regulations.
  • Due to the work environment and as a condition of employment, Arlington County employees may be required to wear various personal protective equipment in the performance of their duties.
  • A pre-employment criminal records check may be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Additional Information
This is a six-week program (approximately through the end of December 2026), up to 60 hours per week (7am - 5:30 pm), six (6) days per week (Monday through Saturday), with overtime paid for work performed over 40 hours per week. These are temporary, seasonal positions eligible for sick leave only.

The official title for this position is Motorized Vehicle Operator II (Temp).
