Job Description

Mō te tūranga | About the role

We’re looking for a practical, hands-on Leading Hand to join our Far North team, based in Kaitaia. This is a role for someone who likes being out on site, getting stuck in, and stepping up when it counts. You’ll support daily workflow across maintenance activities, operate machinery and equipment, and help keep our network safe and moving.

This role includes emergency response work and being part of an on-call roster, so you’ll need to be ready to respond, work flexibly across AM and PM shifts, and pitch in on weekends as required. If you’re the kind of person who can work autonomously, take initiative, and back up the team with high standards and low ego, you’ll fit right in.

Ngā tino kawenga mahi | Key role responsibilities

  • Conduct cyclic maintenance activities, including pothole repairs, pavement maintenance, sign installation, and other general operational work.
  • Operate machinery, tools, and equipment safely and effectively outdoors on active work sites.
  • Undertake emergency response and rostered on-call work, including shift and weekend work as required.
  • Read and interpret works schedules, site requirements, and compliance standards to deliver good work.
  • Step up on site when needed, including supporting less experienced team members and helping keep jobs moving.

Kei te kimi mātou i tētahi e whai ana i ēnei pūkenga | We’re looking for someone with

  • A minimum Class 2 licence with Wheels, Tracks and Rollers endorsements.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in RFS, cyclic maintenance, or similar roading construction and maintenance work.
  • Traffic management awareness and experience, with STMS qualification highly desirable.
  • Good communication skills and confidence using digital tools, including iPads for data entry and daily site documentation.
  • A reliable, self-motivated and honest approach, with the initiative to work proactively and independently without direction.
  • Previous Leading Hand or Team Leader experience an advantage.

He pai te mahi, he pai ngā painga | Good work, good benefits

At Fulton Hogan, we genuinely care about the wellbeing of our people and giving them the tools and opportunities they need to succeed and grow with us. You’ll have access to:

  • Medical insurance and Life insurance after the eligibility period.
  • KiwiSaver employer contributions after service milestones, up to 7%.
  • Parental leave top up payment with additional return to work support.
  • Ongoing training and development, with clear career growth and progression opportunities.
  • Great discounts at a wide range of retailers.

Ko wai mātou | About us

At Fulton Hogan, Good Work is about more than what we build. It’s how we show up for each other, our customers, and the communities we work in. We’re flat, friendly, and forward moving. Titles matter less than ideas, and the best ideas win.

We take the work seriously, not ourselves. That means a relaxed, down-to-earth team culture day to day, and a real switch-on when safety, quality, and delivery matter most. If you want to do meaningful work with good people and keep growing while you do it, this could be your place.
