Job Description

At Urban Utilities, our purpose is simple yet powerful – Enrich Quality of Life. With a $7 billion asset base and services spanning 1.5 million residents and more than 31,000 commercial customers across South East Queensland, we are committed to enhancing the liveability of our communities every day.

Your Opportunity

The Infrastructure Planning & Delivery Group contributes to Urban Utilities' purpose of delivering reliable, sustainable water services by enhancing the liveability of our communities through long-term water cycle planning, responsible stewardship of environmental and infrastructure assets, and strategic investment in the future.

We're seeking a strategic and collaborative technical Leader System Modelling to guide Urban Utilities' enterprise modelling function and help shape how we plan, test and optimise the systems that support our growing region.

This is not a role focused on building models day-to-day. Instead, you'll lead an established team of specialists, drive modelling strategy and governance, and influence the planning, investment and operational decisions that will define the future of our water, wastewater and recycled water networks. With a strong foundation already in place, you'll have a clear mandate to strengthen and evolve the capability, embed best practice, and accelerate its progression towards operational modelling, automation, advanced analytics and digital twin applications as part of Urban Utilities' broader digital transformation journey.

Reporting to the Manager Asset and System Knowledge, you'll champion the strategic use of modelling across the business, ensuring insights inform critical decisions while positioning Urban Utilities to meet future growth, sustainability and service challenges with confidence.

About the Role

As Leader System Modelling, you will:

  • Lead and develop a high-performing team of modelling specialists.
  • Set the strategic direction for Urban Utilities' modelling capability.
  • Drive modelling governance, quality assurance and technical standards.
  • Ensure modelling outputs are trusted, fit for purpose and support sound business decision-making.
  • Influence infrastructure planning, investment and operational outcomes across the organisation.
  • Partner with stakeholders across planning, operations, asset management and delivery functions.
  • Lead the evolution of Urban Utilities' modelling capability through innovation, automation and digital twin initiatives.

This role offers a unique opportunity to move beyond technical delivery and lead a capability that supports some of the most significant infrastructure decisions across the business.

About you:

You're an experienced technical leader who combines deep modelling expertise with the ability to lead people, drive capability uplift and influence outcomes across a complex organisation. You've built credibility as a technical expert, with deep expertise in process and hydraulic modelling and a passion for using data to solve complex infrastructure challenges. You're passionate about developing people, setting technical direction and ensuring modelling delivers meaningful outcomes for the business and community.

You will bring:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Process, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical teams or specialist capability functions, including model governance, quality assurance, and technical review.
  • Deep expertise in hydraulic modelling or process modelling using tools like BioWin, Sumo, GoldSim, InfoWorks ICM/WS, Bentley SewerGEMS/WaterGEMS, DHI MIKE, or equivalent platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience in performance analysis for water and wastewater treatment plants.
  • Knowledge of water and wastewater systems and how modelling supports planning, operational and investment decision-making.
  • Sound knowledge of regulatory frameworks, environmental discharge requirements, and industry modelling standards.

Desirable

  • RPEQ, CPENG or the ability to obtain.
  • Experience directing model automation and calibration validation capability (e.g. Python-based scenario analysis) and governing spatial data pipelines for modelling datasets.
  • Understanding of model productisation, digital twin concepts, and operational/real-time modelling applications.
  • Sound knowledge of asset management principles and infrastructure investment planning processes.
