Job Description

Role purpose and overview

The Lead US Publisher is responsible for the Telegraph’s US digital publishing operation, encompassing everything from live blogs to in-depth features and comment.

They will work closely with the Washington Bureau Chief and other commissioners and writers in America, as well as UK colleagues on the Foreign desk, News Publishing and audience and promotion teams. They will collaborate with and challenge commissioners, oversee headlines and visuals, make publishing plans and ensure all the Telegraph’s US content is distinctive and executed to the quality expected.

The role reports to the Head of Publishing in London and will manage two US Publishers. Working across a fast-paced newsroom, the Lead US Publisher must balance the needs of a variety of content types, maximising subscriber engagement and seeking out new audiences.

Key responsibilities

  • Direct US publishers to ensure that content is produced to the highest standard and at optimal times across our digital products and platforms.
  • Collaborate with and challenge commissioners to ensure articles have a clear audience and purpose, present creative ideas and act as a conduit between commissioning and publishing.
  • Ensure articles have snappy headlines and are published at the right time and length, with intelligent copy and compelling visuals.
  • Sub and build priority content or delegate this responsibility appropriately.
  • Work with commissioners and audience teams to develop daily publishing schedules and plans for major events or issues.
  • Analyse performance data to understand the Telegraph’s audience and, using the data, learn from what publishing and promotion techniques work well and why, feeding back to commissioners.
  • Work closely with visual editors, commission assets and graphics, and direct publishers in making creative use of video and pictures.
  • Work with the Homepage & App, Social, SEO, and Community teams to ensure articles are promoted to the right audiences and in the right way so that they achieve their full potential.
  • Support the development of individuals in the publishing team and act as a mentor to junior colleagues.

Key skills

  • Experience of managing a team in a busy newsroom.
  • Excellent news sense to be able to cast a critical eye over articles to ensure they are written and presented in the best fashion.
  • Clear understanding of who the Telegraph US audience is and what makes them engage with a story.
  • A broad awareness of Telegraph US content and ability to generate new ideas to identify and break into new audiences.
  • Understanding of data analytics and how it can be used to aid publishing.
  • Understanding of what brilliant writing looks like and how best to present articles across digital products and platforms.
  • Significant experience of sub-editing and publishing on digital platforms in News.
  • Quick, accurate writing of headlines.
  • Knowledge of visual storytelling and a brilliant eye for photography as well as creative flair for info boxes, polls, graphics, etc.
  • Ability to respond well under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines.
