Position Summary
The Lead Diesel Mechanic plays a critical role in maintaining fleet reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance. By overseeing complex diagnostics, leading repair efforts, and supporting preventive maintenance programs, this position helps minimize equipment downtime and extend asset life. The Lead Diesel Mechanic also provides technical guidance to shop staff, contributing to consistent repair quality, cost control, and adherence to DOT and safety standards, which directly supports operational continuity and service commitments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead and perform advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair of diesel trucks, trailers, and related equipment.
- Oversee and support preventive maintenance programs to ensure fleet reliability and DOT compliance.
- Serve as a technical lead and mentor to mechanics and apprentices, providing guidance, training, and quality oversight.
- Inspect completed repairs to ensure work meets safety, quality, and operational standards.
- Identify and recommend corrective actions to reduce repeat repairs and unplanned downtime.
- Coordinate with the Shop Manager to prioritize repairs, manage workflow, and meet operational deadlines.
- Ensure accurate documentation of inspections, repairs, labor, and parts usage in maintenance systems.
- Support warranty identification and recovery by properly documenting eligible repairs.
- Enforce safety policies, OSHA standards, and company procedures within the shop environment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Assist with vendor coordination and technical support as needed.
- Remain current on equipment specifications, repair techniques, and regulatory requirements.

- Repair Quality: Completes repairs accurately and efficiently, minimizing repeat repairs and unplanned downtime.
- Preventive Maintenance Compliance: Ensures PM schedules are followed and documented in accordance with company and DOT requirements.
- Safety & Compliance: Adheres to and enforces safety policies, OSHA standards, and DOT regulations within the shop environment.
- Cost Control: Supports cost-effective maintenance practices, including proper parts usage, warranty identification, and repair decision-making.
- Documentation & Systems: Accurately documents repairs, inspections, and parts usage within maintenance systems.
- Collaboration: Communicates effectively with the Shop Manager, maintenance administrators, and operations teams to align priorities and equipment readiness.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on diesel mechanic experience in fleet, heavy-duty truck, or trailer maintenance.
- Demonstrated experience performing advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, and complex repairs on diesel equipment.
- Strong working knowledge of DOT regulations, FMCSA requirements, and preventive maintenance standards.
- Proven ability to lead, train, and support other mechanics or apprentices in a shop environment.
- Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, repair manuals, and maintenance software systems.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality workmanship.
- Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with shop leadership and operations teams.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced maintenance environment and manage multiple priorities.
- Reliable attendance and strong work ethic.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work is performed primarily in a maintenance shop environment with exposure to noise, grease, dust, fumes, and varying temperatures.
- Regular interaction with heavy equipment, power tools, and moving vehicles is required.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull parts, tools, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Manual dexterity and visual acuity required to perform detailed mechanical repairs, diagnostics, and inspections.
- Ability to work in awkward or confined positions as required for equipment repair.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required in accordance with company safety policies.
