Job requirements

The Lead Specialist (Grade 3) plays a key role in managing complex member and client queries, delivering high‑quality calculations, and ensuring compliance with scheme rules and legislation.
The role requires deep technical knowledge of Defined Benefit (DB), Defined Contribution (DC), and Hybrid schemes.

You will support junior colleagues through peer review, coaching, technical guidance, and quality checks.

Role & Responsibilities

Technical Expertise & Case Management

  • Handle complex scheme member queries through letters, email, and telephone.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of scheme rules, benefits structure and governance.
  • Perform complex pensions calculations using automated and manual processes across a wide range of member and scheme events.
  • Process work in line with scheme rules, service standards, and internal procedures.

Quality Control & Peer Review

  • Conduct peer reviews of calculations and member communications completed by junior team members.
  • Ensure high accuracy standards, identify errors, and provide corrective guidance.
  • Monitor team progress using MI tools and highlight risks or delays.
  • Ensure complaints, errors and omissions are handled per agreed procedures and within timelines.

Client & Operations Manager Support

  • Support Client Directors with updates and issue resolution as needed.
  • Provide timely updates Operations Managers on delivery status.
  • Highlight risks, delays, or operational challenges with transparency.
  • Participate in process reviews and contribute to service improvement.
  • Support automation initiatives, error‑reduction efforts, and process standardisation.
  • Work with managers to enhance Team capability.
  • Ensure adherence to SOPs, internal controls, and audit requirements.
  • Ensure all colleagues follow compliance, data security, and confidentiality guidelines.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of Scheme types, member calculations, and governing UK pensions legislation.
  • Ability to perform and review complex pension calculations with high accuracy.
  • Strong analytical thinking, problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to coach junior team members and support quality improvement.
  • Capability to analyse and improve processes.
  • Relevant professional qualification (PMI or equivalent) – desirable
