Title and Summary

Lead Software Engineer - Java

Are you an experienced software engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and helping others build better solutions? As a Lead Software Engineer, you will design, build, and operate secure, scalable, and resilient technology that supports important payment services. You will combine hands-on development with technical leadership and work closely with teams across product, operations, architecture, infrastructure, risk, and customer-facing functions.

Mastercard Payment Services:

In Mastercard Payment Services, you will contribute to critical European payment clearing and settlement services. This includes real-time and batch clearing, instant payments, participant-facing services, liquidity and settlement capabilities, reporting, and related payment infrastructure.

You will help ensure these services are reliable, secure, and resilient by applying strong engineering practices, automation, production ownership, and continuous improvement.

What you will do

• Design, build, integrate, and improve secure, scalable applications and services.
• Take ownership of complex service issues and coordinate resolution across teams.
• Work with product partners and stakeholders on priorities, trade-offs, and technical roadmaps.
• Improve delivery quality through automation, code reviews, testing, scanning, and standard engineering practices.
• Use incident learnings to strengthen stability, resilience, and continuous improvement.
• Introduce new technologies and reusable patterns within enterprise guidelines.

How you will lead:

• Provide hands-on technical guidance on architecture, development, and engineering practices.
• Collaborate across teams, functions, and organisations to deliver shared outcomes.
• Encourage knowledge sharing, reusable patterns, and active engineering communities.
• Support fair, evidence-based hiring and promotion input when needed.

What you bring:

• Strong experience designing, developing, integrating, testing, and maintaining production software systems.
• Good understanding of architecture patterns, system design, performance, resilience, and maintainability.
• Experience with secure coding, code quality, code reviews, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
• Practical knowledge of automation, DevOps toolchains, cloud-native patterns, and service integration.
• Experience building testing into delivery, including unit, functional, integration, regression, performance, resilience, and acceptance testing.
• Ability to collaborate across teams, mentor engineers, and influence engineering practices.

Technical experience:

• Core Java 8+, Spring, Spring Boot, Hibernate, Maven, Jenkins, Linux, Git, Oracle, and Docker.
• React JS is an advantage.
• Experience using AI-assisted tools to develop code is welcome.
