The Lead Security Officer supports the Supervisor of Security in maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly learning environment at District facilities. This position assists in coordinating and supervising security operations, providing operational support to building administrators, security staff, and district leadership.

The role includes responding to safety concerns, assisting with staff coordination, supporting security coverage across multiple campuses, and promoting a proactive, relationship-based approach to school safety. The Lead Security Officer helps ensure that district security practices are implemented consistently while fostering a respectful and supportive environment for students, staff, families, and visitors.

Essential Functions:

Staff Coordination & Leadership Support

• Provide guidance and support to building-based security officers during assigned shifts.

• Assist with coordinating daily posts, patrol coverage, and security assignments across multiple buildings when needed.

• Support onboarding and training of new security staff in district procedures, expectations, and safety practices.

• Provide real-time support to security staff responding to incidents or safety concerns.

• Assist the Supervisor of Security with scheduling adjustments, coverage needs, and operational communication between buildings.

• Promote professional standards, consistency, and accountability among district security personnel.

Incident Response & Safety Management

• Respond to incidents involving student conflicts, unauthorized individuals, or potential safety threats.

• Utilize de-escalation techniques and trauma-informed practices to help resolve conflicts safely and respectfully.

• Assist school administrators with managing behavioral or safety-related incidents.

• Coordinate with school staff, counselors, social workers, and School Resource Officers when appropriate.

• Document incidents and prepare clear, accurate reports for review by the Supervisor of Security and district administration.

• Support district emergency response procedures, including lockdowns, evacuations, shelter-in-place events, and reunification protocols.

Surveillance & Facility Monitoring

• Assist with monitoring security cameras and surveillance systems as needed.

• Report suspicious activity or safety hazards observed on school grounds or surrounding areas.

• Coordinate responses to safety concerns both on and adjacent to district property.

• Assist in identifying facility vulnerabilities and recommending improvements to strengthen district safety practices.

Student, Staff & Community Engagement

• Maintain a visible and supportive presence throughout the school building.

• Build positive and respectful relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.

• Provide assistance to staff with safety concerns in classrooms, hallways, and common areas.

• Communicate professionally with parents, visitors, and community members entering district facilities.

Qualifications:

• High School diploma or equivalent

• Five to seven years security experience

• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate

Additional Working Conditions:

• Frequent interaction among children

• Frequent operation of a vehicle under inclement weather conditions

• Frequent requirement to lift, push, pull up to a maximum of 200 pounds

• Frequent requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, and stoop

• Occasional evening/weekend/summer work

• Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue

Elementary School students in the GHCS also participate in such valuable literacy programs as LETRs and social/emotional initiatives as the Zones of Regulation. The GHCS places a great deal of emphasis at all levels of education on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (P.B.I.S.) and each school has won awards from the State of Ohio for encouraging and promoting positive behavior.

A wide variety of co-curricular offerings are available to students of all ages in the Garfield Heights City Schools as well. Such opportunities include more than 18 varsity sports, the district's show choir, Music Express, Marching Band, Theater, A �Capella Choir, National Honor Society, Student Council, Glass Ceiling, Future Engineers, and more. These co-curricular offerings are award-winning on the state, regional and local levels.
