Job Description

If you’re looking for a career that will help you stand out, join HSBC, and fulfil your potential - whether you want a career that could take you to the top, or an exciting new direction, we offer opportunities, support and rewards that will take you further.

We’re one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with a network that covers more than 50 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.

We’re currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Lead Risk Officer, HSBC UK.

This role can be based from London, Sheffield, Manchester or Birmingham.

This role supports growth lending objectives across the Middle Market and Large Corporate businesses in this strategic market for the HSBC Group, while ensuring credit risk is managed prudently and in line with HSBC UK and Group policy. It promotes a strong, consistent credit culture and helps prevent undue risk concentrations to maintain a sustainable, high-quality lending portfolio. The role balances robust risk discipline with customer needs and an understanding of market conditions and their impact on credit decisioning.

As an HSBC employee in the UK, you’ll have access to tailored professional development opportunities and a competitive pay and benefits package. This includes private healthcare for all UK-based employees, enhanced maternity and adoption pay and support when you return to work, and a contributory pension scheme with a generous employer contribution.

In this role you’ll:

  • Cover the Industrial/Manufacturing (incl. Chemicals), Transportation (incl. Automotive), and Metals & Mining industry sectors (‘ITMM’) for the UK middle market and large corporate businesses.
  • Evaluate, recommend and approve corporate transactions and annual reviews within delegated personal approval authority.
  • Ensure credit proposals are well structured, commercially sound and designed to minimise credit losses.
  • Partner with the Senior Risk Officer whom you will report to, in order to continuously assess portfolio credit quality, including the appropriateness of Customer Risk Ratings (CRR) and approved limits, and identify emerging concerns that may warrant placement on the Watch, Worry, Monitor (WWM) list.
  • Provide industry and product expertise to business and regional credit teams across lending, trade, cash management and trading/hedging products.
  • Improve the risk profile across customer segments by implementing lending and credit guidelines and maintaining consistent credit standards.
  • Deliver ad-hoc support including industry reporting (internal/external), guidance/training for first- and second-line colleagues, audit support and contribution to stress testing exercises.

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:

  • Demonstrated commercial credit judgement, with experience managing credit processes as well as assessing individual transactions.
  • Demonstrable corporate credit experience, ideally in the sectors being covered.
  • Solid grounding in legal, accounting and regulatory considerations relevant to corporate lending.
  • Confidence to challenge constructively and influence outcomes across stakeholders.
  • A broad corporate banking background covering lending products, operations and associated risk processes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, able to translate complex credit issues into clear recommendations.
  • Customer engagement and people management experience welcomed (not a requirement).
  • Exposure to UK Industrials (incl. Chemicals), Transportation (incl. Automotive), Metals and Mining (‘ITMM’) and UK corporate approval environments is a plus, including an understanding of sector dynamics and “industry landscaping”.
