Job Description

Grow-With-Us Role — Pet Store Operations

Location: 5120 Broadway, Alamo Heights, San Antonio, TX

Pay: $16.00/hr (opportunity for quick growth)

Position Summary

We’re looking for a customer-first Lead Retail Associate, who wants to grow into an Assistant Manager / Key Holder position with a small, independent pet store in Alamo Heights. Right now the team is lean — this role will work closely with the owner/manager and help cover the floor, especially on busy delivery days and Saturdays as we bring on part-time help. Customer service remains the top priority. You’ll also bring (or be ready to build) solid computer skills in Excel, Word, Canva, and social media, and the ability to multi-task across systems that don’t automatically sync. This is a true “grow into the position” opportunity for someone reliable who can step up as a key holder over time.

Essential Duties

  • •Deliver excellent customer service as the #1 priority: greet customers, answer questions, recommend products (including nutrition and supplements), and handle issues with a positive, professional attitude.
  • •Support daily store operations and act as a key holder as the role develops: help with opening/closing procedures, cash handling, and keeping the store running smoothly.
  • •Receive and process large distributor shipments: check packing slips, inspect for damage, put product away quickly and accurately, and support inventory accuracy.
  • •Operate Square POS while managing the separate Astro rewards/loyalty program (the systems do not auto-sync — multi-tasking and careful attention to detail are essential).
  • •Create and update simple documents, spreadsheets, and social media content using Microsoft Excel, Word, and Canva.
  • •Help with social media: take product and customer photos, draft posts, and support a consistent online presence under direction.
  • •Stock shelves, rotate inventory, face merchandise, and assist with cycle counts while balancing floor duties and computer tasks.
  • •Learn product lines thoroughly (food, treats, supplies, and supplements) and basic pet nutrition so you can make confident recommendations.
  • •As the store adds part-time team members (especially on delivery days and Saturdays), help train and support them on customer service standards and basic procedures.
  • •Customer service is the #1 requirement: proven ability to stay friendly, helpful, and solution-oriented, even when the store is busy or short-staffed.
  • •Strong computer skills with Excel, Microsoft Word, and Canva (or similar tools). Comfortable learning new software quickly.
  • •Social media literacy: ability to create or support posts, stories, and basic visual content.
  • •Excellent multi-tasking skills, especially managing systems that do not automatically sync (Square POS + Astro rewards).
  • •Ability to receive and process large orders accurately and efficiently.
  • •Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to work a flexible retail schedule including Saturdays and delivery days.
  • •Genuine interest in pets and helping pet owners is strongly preferred. Prior retail or pet industry experience is a plus; key-holder experience is helpful but not required if you’re ready to grow into it.
  • •Able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds (required for receiving and stocking).
  • •Able to stand, walk, and move product for extended periods while multi-tasking.
  • •Employee discounts on store products.
  • •Paid training on products, pet nutrition, and store systems.
  • •A real opportunity to grow into a key holder / assistant manager role as the store adds part-time support.
  • •Hands-on involvement in both floor operations and supporting computer/social media tasks in a neighborhood pet store focused on quality products and customer care.
