Job Description

This position is Monday through Friday starting at 7am until 3:30pm with rotating call!!

This position is eligible for a sign on bonus of up to $15,000!

This position is eligible for a relocation bonus of $5000 if residing 75+ miles from Mercy Medical Center

40This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by performing interpretive, patient care and technical functions to ensure proper radiological diagnosis of patients under the direction of the department manager. The Lead Radiographer will have additional responsibilities precepting new employees and students in addition to being an expert resource for all front-line staff. The Lead Radiographer works with the supervisor to assist with the oversight of staffing, resources, and training for the areas in which they work. The role also includes taking OR call on a rotational basis to support surgical imaging needs.

Job Duties

  • Ensures that all accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families and co-workers at hand-offs and other times as needed. Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information to allow for the best possible patient outcome.
  • Demonstrates competence in performing diagnostic radiographic examinations using fixed, portable, C-arm, and O-arm equipment across Radiology and additional locations as needed, including Fluoroscopy, Pain Clinic, and Diagnostic X-ray. Adheres strictly to established protocols while applying radiation safety principles (ALARA) to ensure the lowest possible radiation dose is used to obtain high-quality diagnostic images.
  • Explains and prepares the patient for all Radiographic procedures.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of RIS, PACS, Workday and other computer software assigned, and serves as the super user for staff.
  • Identifies each patient correctly verifying the exam to be performed is being done on the correct patient.
  • Reviews each patient's medical history and clinical diagnosis for appropriateness of exam as necessary.
  • Reviews radiographic images for technique, positioning, laterality, patient demographics and image quality and repeats images of poor quality.
  • Works in Surgery as a radiographer and participates in the OR call rotation, sharing on-call responsibilities with other OR radiographers to ensure continuous coverage and support for surgical procedures.
  • Adheres to all infection control policies in surgery.
  • Understands the School of Radiologic Technology's clinical competency system.
  • Maintains current knowledge of School of Radiology policies, procedures, and student progress.
  • Understands requirements for student supervision as outlined in the Student Supervision policy for the Mercy/St. Luke's school of Radiologic Technology.
  • Communicates with School of Radiology faculty on student-related progress and issues.
  • Attends and participates in meetings/educational programs in Radiologic Technology Education.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Clearly communicates and introduces new processes into the department/unit.
  • Keeps supervisor aware of staffing issues.
  • Precepts and orients students and new staff.
  • Serves as an expert resource to staff for clinical or technical questions.
  • Participates in student and employee annual evaluations, providing constructive feedback to ensure reviews are done on time.
  • Additional responsibilities including, but not limited to annual lead vest checks, creates and maintains call schedule for OR radiographers, enters daily OR XR orders, supply ordering, maintains and calibrates equipment.
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Competent using fixed, portable, C-arm, and O-arm equipment across Radiology.

Professional Experience

  • 1 year experience in general radiography required.
  • In addition, 1 year experience in surgical radiology required.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.

Education

  • Education sufficient to obtain required licensure/certifications.

Licensure, Certification, Registration

  • American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT) certificate required.
  • Iowa Department of Public Health State Permit to Practice Diagnostic Radiography required.
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
