Job Description

Main Activities and Responsibilities: (including but not limited to)

  • Providing HSE leadership and advisory support to WSP employees, contractors and project teams in site-based environments, with typically 90% of time spent in the field or on client activities.
  • The availability to work extended hours and rostered shifts aligned with project delivery schedules, including arrangements such as 10:4 rotations, weekend and night work and/or 12-hour shifts. Overtime and additional hours worked in accordance with project requirements will be remunerated in line with applicable employment conditions.
  • Provide guidance and support to Project Managers in facilitating hazard identification workshops, developing and maintaining project risk registers, and incorporating client, legal and other project-specific requirements relevant to site investigations, construction-phase activities and Principal Contractor obligations.
  • Provide guidance and support to Project Managers regarding the development, implementation and monitoring of project HSE management plans, systems and controls, and act as an interface between the project team, the Health and Safety Team and the client to support alignment of HSE expectations, reporting and project requirements.
  • Conduct plant and equipment inspections as a core field activity of the role, including but not limited to drill rigs, light vehicles, excavators, barges and other project plant, to verify condition, suitability, compliance and safe operation on site.

    Implementation of the various project management plans related to HSE onsite including the following activities:

  • Conducting inductions/Pre-starts
  • ISMS report and subsequent toolbox talks
  • Drug and Alcohol Testing
  • Incident reporting
  • Conducting regular Site Audits
  • Preparation and/or review of Emergency Management Plans, Health and Safety Plans as the project progresses
  • Preparation and/or review of SWMS
  • Providing training and education to staff on all things WHS
  • Plant and vehicle inspections
  • Audits of HSE documentation
  • Issuing Client safety reports
  • Provide guidance and support to Project Managers in ensuring project specific HSE risks are managed effectively including:
    • Monitoring implementation of the Project Risk Register
    • Monitoring implementation of SWMS and the effectiveness of risk controls
    • Monitoring implementation of inductions and verification of competency of workers on the project
    • Monitoring the availability, suitability and condition of PPE, safety and emergency equipment
  • Provide guidance to and support Project Managers regarding all reported hazards, incidents and any subsequent investigations
  • Provide health and safety advice to workers and supervisors on site as required
  • Provision of technical QA and consulting support of WHS projects to clients, alongside Safety & Compliance colleagues

Qualifications (Minimum and Desirable):

  • Cert IV/Diploma in OH&S (minimum)

  • Bachelors Degree or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or an Applied Science or Engineering or equivalent (desirable)

  • RTW Co-ordinator (desirable)

  • Lead Auditor ISO45001 and/or ICAM Investigator qualifications highly desirable

  • Australian drivers licence (mandatory)

  • 4x4 Defensive driver training

  • Work at Heights certificate (desirable)

  • Advanced Medic Responder (desirable)

Experience, skills and organisational knowledge

  • Typically, 10 - 15 years’ experience within a similar industry and/or risk profile (Construction, Mining, Infrastructure)
  • Strong experience in engaging, working with and supervising contractors and suppliers. Proven ability to deal with difficult and challenging issues, and high-risk site environments.
  • Highly competent in workplace risk assessment including identification of hazards, assessment of risk, recommending controls and preparing relevant HSE documentation. Review and endorse plans for complex projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing and reviewing high quality complex technical information in a variety of formats
  • Regularly applies and interprets relevant legislation ,standards, guidelines, Codes of Practice and the like on projects. Mentors others in this regard.
  • Highly competent in monitoring, managing and delivering projects of varying complexity and size.
  • Leads winning proposals and pursuits. Experienced in winning a job from a job.
  • Engagement, relationship building and teamwork

  • Negotiation and management of conflict

  • HSE technical skills (e.g. training, auditing, investigation, etc)

  • Practiced knowledge of WSP's organisational capability and how to access it.

  • Practiced knowledge of systems, procedures and practices.

  • Practiced knowledge of organisational approach to risk management, ethics and safety.
