Job Description

The Role

As a Lead Design Engineer, you will lead the technical output of the Design Engineers and undertake your own projects, which will be of a complex or high value nature. Reporting to the Design Manager/lead design coordinator, you will be involved in the coaching and training of individuals whilst keeping up to date with industry standards. You will promote value engineering and authorise the design checks of others.

lead engineer: -

Head team of 2-3 engineers and CAD.

Keep project on track and achieve required milestones for the project.

Liaise with Project managers and Head of engineering.

Report status of each project.

Checking and approving senior engineer design works.

Responsible for yearly appraisal and development activities of team members and report to head of engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop concept design for tender stage/detail stage.

  • Proven track record of Heading team of engineers and reporting on design Issues.

  • Working across multiple projects at same time.

  • Find design solutions which are customer oriented.

  • Resolve design issues with project managers and design managers.

  • Chair internal design meetings form risk perspective.

  • Present design in Client DTM meetings and explaining the design technicalities.

  • Checking design and helping juniors to develop primary design engineering deliverables list. Developing specifications, calculations etc.

  • Knowledge of cable design upto 132kV desirable not essential. Cable terminations. Estimation of cable lengths.

  • Reporting on progress reports and managing working man hours.

  • Produce compliant designs in accordance with customer requirements and industry standards.

  • Client office visits when required.

  • Understand, apply and train others on ENA, DNO & IDNO G81 design standards and engineering recommendations BS and IEC standards

  • Coach and support junior members on the team with client interactions and meetings

  • Process job specific cost estimates for variations and contract changes

  • Authorise design checks for others (CAD technician/primary engineer)

  • Promote value engineering and better ways or working within the team

  • Monitor and maintain design standards

  • Ensure all design work is carried out in line with NERS accreditations

  • Escalate problems in a timely manner to minimise business exposure

Experience & Qualities

Essential:

  • HND or degree in an electrical discipline

  • Experience of 132kV ,66,33kV and 11kV substation design

  • Take the design forward in case design team member is not available.

  • LV design to a high level of quality as per BS 7671

  • Experience of earthing designs across multiple DNO regions

  • Proven track record of authorising design checks across multiple DNO regions

  • Demonstratable competency in the physical and practical application of electrical installations

  • Ability to effectively communicate design requirements to clients, Project Managers and site teams

Desirable:

  • Ability to recognise gaps in business processes and develop and implement new systems to allow the effective delivery of projects

  • Working knowledge and experience of private electricity networks , substations for Data centre , solar farms , Battery storage

  • Ability to recognise gaps in own or others competencies, be it technical or soft skills

  • 400kV/275kV substation desirable

  • Ability to coach and train junior engineers

  • Ability to multitask and prioritise own complex workload with needs of the team
