Position Responsibilities
Maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.
Complies withall ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements, goals,policiesand procedures.Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legaldocumentation.
Performs preventive maintenance on primary Power Plant generators, remote site and airfield generatorsand various emergency generators.
Performs on-site troubleshooting,repairsand overhauls of generator engines.
Responds to station power outages and equipment failures asrequired
Willingness to carry a radio or pager for after hour’s callout’s
Completes maintenance records and documents all maintenance performed andmaintainsoperating logbooks and databases asrequired
Schedules diesel engine/generator operationsin order tomaintaina 3000-hour spread between engines.
Operates Power Plant equipment in an efficient and economical manner.
Coordinates with the UtilitiesSupervisor or their on-ice representativeto order repair and/or spare parts, maintenance parts, assemblies,toolsand consumables.
Maintains control of plant tools, manuals, repair parts,assembliesandconsumables.
Maintainsinventory accuracy at 98% or better.
Ability to work alone or within a team depending on situation.
Trains Power Plant Operators and Mechanics on Power Plant operation and equipment as directed.
Ability to cover Power Plant Operator shift / rounds asrequired
Advises the UtilitiesSupervisor or their on-ice representativeof the status of power production equipment and systems.
Willingness to work a rotating shift; day,swingor night shift.
Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly affected by this position’s work activities.
Providesappropriate safetytraining to employees and documents the training.
Evaluates job hazards and communicates information to staff verbally and in writing through various venues, including weekly and/or daily crew meetings.
Interprets project taskingutilizingdesign drawings,specificationsand diagrams.
Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.)in accordance withmanagement policy and with the highest degree of professionalism.
Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing, with their subordinates as needed to relay information they needin order tobe successful in their jobs. This includes, but is not limited to, staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, division metrics, projects, Quality Standard Procedures, and safety practices.
May berequiredto work outside on various jobsites in extremecold weatherand environmentally challenging conditions.
Interacts with other partner companies, the National Science Foundation,militaryand other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person. Is kind, courteous,cooperativeand professionalat all times
Participate in dormitory chores while deployed to Antarctica.

High School diploma orGED
Minimum five (5) years’ experiencerequiredin diesel powered generators, marine diesel engines, or industrial diesel engines.
At least two of the five years’ experience must be in a supervisory role.
ExpectedSkills and Competencies:
Mechanical aptitude with the ability to handle multiple tasks at once isrequired
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the maintenance and repair of diesel electric generating equipment isrequired
Thorough knowledge of the methods, hazards, and safety precautions related to diesel engines and diesel engine driven electric generators isrequired
Ability tomaintaina professional attitude and to work efficiently in a stressful environment isrequired
Working comprehension of electrical distribution, controlpanelsand medium voltage switchgear.
Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.
Preferred
Previousexperience with remote Polar Logistics operations
Previousmechanical experience on 1MW and larger diesel engine/generators
Experience with Caterpillar documentation and software (ET, SIS)
Training,certificationor experience on Caterpillar 3500 / 3600 series engines
Experience working with remote field generators
Physical and/or Other Requirements
Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.
Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold
Mustparticipatein community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safetyobjectives
Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States
Must be able to obtain andmaintainfacility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship isrequiredfor facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
