Performs senior functions relating to coordinating and leading the plant operations shop for various assignments throughout the Hospital. Partners with leadership to prioritize work, staffing and department needs are met. Coordinates and collaborates with other staff to assure that departmental outcomes are achieved. Has specialized knowledge of plumbing works and systems and is a resource to management and staff.

Job Responsibility

  • * Diagnoses the cause of leaks, pressure failures, valve malfunctions, regulator problems and repairs or replaces defective valves, piping and fittings to restore a system to normal perception.
  • * Works from drawings, sketches or verbal instructions to install and modify plumbing systems.
  • * Plans sequence, details of operations, material required and time estimated to complete assigned tasks.
  • * Performs gas welding, arc welding, braze solder and silver solder with materials consistent with the plumbing trade.
  • * Maintains records of repairs made and preventative maintenance performed.
  • * Maintains repairs, replaces and installs sinks, faucets, water closets, water coolers, kitchen equipment and other equipment consistent with the plumbing trade.May assist plumbing contractors in performance of their duties.
  • * Performs and completes assigned tasks utilizing necessary tools, pipe threaders, pipe cutters, reamers, power drain cleaners and other power tools.
  • * Ability to diagnose and repair problems to steam, water, oil, sewage, and all pumps and associated equipment.
  • * Diagnoses and repairs problems to boilers and boiler safety devices.
  • * Troubleshoots and repairs difficulties to hot water and chilled water circulating systems.
  • * Maintains repairs and replaces steam traps, steam valves and other devices related to the steam cycle and network.
  • * Maintains and repairs air handling equipment including filters, dampers, coils, registers and duct work.
  • * Maintains plumbing shop and storage, maintenance shop and assigned work area in a neat and orderly manner.
  • * Maintains records and inventory of shop supplies and recommends and/or prepares purchase requests, as directed.
  • * Assists Contractors in shutdown of services and utility systems.
  • * Serves as a member of the Fire Response Team.
  • * Maintains knowledge of latest Codes and performs all tasks in accordance with local, state, federal, and Hospital building codes
  • * Responds to hospital emergencies such as snow removal, utility failures, etc., as directed.
  • * Assist shop training as necessary and follows- up on assignments.
  • * Assist with assigning work to department personnel and inspects assignment to ensure proper workmanship & quality outcomes and completion of assignment in absence of managers of department.
  • * Coordinates and collaborates with various staff and trades to ensure departmental outcomes are achieved.
  • * Coordinates work schedule, day-off and vacation.
  • * Assists with prompt completion of work orders and preventive maintenance work orders of the department personnel.
  • * Assists management to monitor and maintain shop inventory of materials, equipment, including creating and completing purchasing requisitions.
  • * Maintain a safe working environment.
  • * Performs emergency repairs as needed communicates these repairs with Director of Department appropriately.
  • * Perform maintenance mechanic works as assigned (refer to Maintenance Mechanic Job Description).Performs daily equipment rounds and other inspections as assigned.
  • * Reviews applicable code compliance and ensure projects are within requirements.
  • Performs related duties, as required.

Job Qualification

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required. Associate Degree in Engineering related fields, preferred.
  • Vocational school certificate for plumbing training is required.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years/ experience as a plumber or journeyman plumber in a hospital, industrial plant or similar institution. Including experience in a hospital environment and leadership role. Maintenance repairs, and installation and trouble- shooting experience with domestic water system, HVAC piping, valves, controls, pumps, sewer system, plumbing fixtures and rough-out installation, hot water heaters, and boiler equipment.
  • Knowledge and work experience in general maintenance tasks in minor electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and general repairs, etc.
  • Plumber license preferable.Knowledge of blueprint reading, etc.
  • Valid Driver's License, required.
