Lead Phlebotomist

The Lead Phlebotomist oversees daily phlebotomy operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. They coordinate staff workflow and scheduling, provide training and competency support, address patient and staff concerns, and assist with quality and regulatory compliance. The role also serves as a clinical resource and collaborates with laboratory leadership, nursing, and other departments to improve specimen collection and overall departmental operations.

Description:

  • Coordinate daily phlebotomy workflow, staffing, scheduling, breaks, and coverage; ensure timely morning rounds and specimen transport; adjust staffing based on patient care needs; address daily personnel concerns; monitor safety and PPE compliance; track quality metrics and action plans; and support staff with patient care duties.
  • Ensure timely recollection of rejected specimens, accurate LIS documentation of collection issues, and effective communication of concerns that may impact patient care.
  • Coordinate the department’s training and competency program in collaboration with the Phlebotomy Educator and Preceptors.
  • Oversee phlebotomy supply stocking, address patient and nursing-unit concerns, and provide input for employee performance evaluations.
  • Work closely with laboratory leadership, nursing, and other departments to maintain efficient operations and high-quality patient care.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 year of job related experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required. If not already certified, applicants must obtain BLS within 30 days of their hire date.
