The Role:
Navantia Australia is seeking an experienced Lead General Design Engineer to lead the General Design Engineering team supporting the delivery of engineering services for naval ships.
Working from our Darling Harbour offices, you will lead and coordinate general design and ship outfitting activities across the full engineering lifecycle, from concept development through to delivery.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Naval Architect to take the lead on technically complex projects while mentoring engineers, engaging with customers and contributing to the design and sustainment of naval platforms.
In this role, you will:
- Lead General Design Engineering activities, including general arrangements, concept design, weight control, stability, seakeeping, manoeuvring and ship performance.
- Lead ship outfitting design activities covering compartment arrangements, structural closures, fire protection, deck arrangements, equipment, ladders, platforms, cargo-handling systems and minor foundations.
- Plan and coordinate engineering projects from concept through to delivery, including project planning, scheduling and stakeholder engagement.
- Develop and review engineering investigations, impact assessments, analyses, drawings, designs, technical reports and installation work packages.
- Ensure platform and ship systems comply with applicable Classification Society rules, legislative requirements, naval standards and commercial standards.
- Conduct systems engineering assessments to confirm compliance with platform specifications and general design requirements.
- Collaborate with other engineering disciplines across the broader Navantia Australia Engineering Team.
- Liaise with customers, subcontractors, suppliers, Classification Societies and relevant national authorities.
- Participate in design coordination meetings and customer design reviews.
- Provide technical guidance, mentoring and support to other engineers.
- Contribute to business development submissions in accordance with the ASDEFCON framework.
About you:
You will bring broad technical knowledge and practical experience in General Design Engineering, preferably gained within naval shipbuilding, maritime engineering or a shipyard environment.
You will ideally have experience across:
- 10+ years working as a Naval Architect.
- General Design Engineering calculations and vessel outfitting.
- Weight control, stability, seakeeping, manoeuvring and ship performance.
- Equipment integration, stowage arrangements and foundations.
- Ship structural design and local structural arrangements.
- Structural closures, joiner doors and bulkheads, deck coverings, false floors, ceilings, linings and insulation.
- Ship systems design and integration.
- Classification Society requirements, Flag State rules and relevant statutory regulations.
- Preparing clear, accurate and professional technical reports.
- Using 2D and 3D CAD tools to develop and review design information.
- Managing engineering projects, schedules and stakeholder relationships.
You will also be comfortable working autonomously, applying sound engineering judgement and delivering high-quality outcomes in a complex, high-pressure environment.

Qualifications:
- Tertiary qualification in Engineering, Naval Architecture.
- Chartered Engineer status, or a desire to work towards chartered status.
- Familiarity with CAD packages
- Australian Citizenship is mandatory
