Job Description

Finnair is a diverse community of professionals who work ambitiously with a big heart and commitment. A strong safety culture is our priority and at the core of our everyday work, never taking it for granted. We are committed to doing our share in solving the climate challenge by determinedly following our science-based pathway to decarbonize our operations. We find meaning in our purpose: With our heart in Finland, we make every journey better, today and tomorrow. Our values – Always Safe, Customer at Heart and Stronger Together– guide us in everything we do.

As part of the evolution of our Digital organisation, we are strengthening strategy implementation by clarifying structures and leadership to bring more focus, improve prioritisation, and support the business more closely. The new setup strengthens product management and software development practices and provides a clearer foundation for data‑ and AI‑driven development, while enabling clearer roles and new opportunities for professional growth.

Our Digital Engineering team builds and runs Finnair's digital customer experience — one of Finland's largest e-commerce platforms. We're investing in how we build it: strengthening our product and software development practices and building toward more modern, AI-assisted engineering. The mobile app is one of the key drivers of our strategy — especially for growing customer engagement and experience — and the platform behind it is central to that.

We are now looking for a

LEAD MOBILE SOFTWARE ENGINEER

to own the technical direction of our shared mobile platform, the foundation our digital teams build their mobile experiences on. The role sits within Finnair's Digital Engineering team and is based at Finnair HQ near Helsinki Airport.

The app is a React Native (Expo) project, built with TypeScript, that several of our digital teams contribute to. This role owns the shared platform underneath and keeps it stable, coherent and something every team can keep building on. You'll be based day to day within one of our teams, while holding the view of the whole platform and how it serves the others.

As Lead Mobile Software Engineer, you are the technical lead for the mobile platform across the teams that build on it, and this is a hands-on role — you stay close to the code while setting direction. This is a senior individual-contributor role focused on technical leadership. Where our other tech leads own the technology for a business domain, your domain is the technology shared between teams: the platform itself, its architecture, and the standards that keep mobile development consistent. Your closest partners are the mobile developers and tech leads in those teams.

In this role, you'll:

  • Set the technical and architectural direction for the shared mobile platform.

  • Stay hands-on — design and build core parts of the platform, review code and designs, and take on the hard problems yourself.

  • Champion strong quality across the platform — automated testing, testable-by-design code, and observability that lets teams release and run the app with confidence.

  • Set and grow the mobile practices, guidelines and tooling that work across the teams, and make sure each team has what it needs to succeed.

  • Keep those teams aligned, so the platform evolves as one rather than pulling in different directions.

  • Own how the platform ships and runs — its build, release and update pipeline, and how it behaves in production.

  • Explore how AI can help the way we build and operate mobile, and guide its adoption across the teams.

What success could look like:

  • In your first months: you know the platform — how it's built, how the teams use it, and where the opportunities are — and you've formed a clear view of where to take it next.

  • Within the first year: the teams building on the platform have the shared practices, tooling and support they need, and day-to-day mobile work flows well across them.

  • Over time: mobile development across our digital teams is fast, consistent and well-supported, and the platform is something every team relies on and enjoys building on.

To succeed and enjoy this role, we hope you bring:

  • Significant, hands-on experience with React Native and TypeScript, with a track record from comparable public-facing apps: complex, business- critical and high-traffic.

  • A strong grasp of the full mobile app lifecycle from architecture and build to release and running the app in production.

  • A real commitment to automated testing and testable-by-design code and setting the bar for practices

  • Strong observability instincts — you build mobile apps you can see into in production (logging, metrics, crash analytics, performance monitoring) and use that to keep things running well.

  • Comfort with the backend-adjacent side of mobile — the APIs, integrations, data flow and performance work behind a good app.

  • Around 7–10+ years in software development, including several years as a technical lead for a team.

  • Comfort leading without formal authority: you bring mobile developers and tech leads across teams along through clarity and credibility, and you're happy to challenge an approach when something doesn't add up.

  • A product mindset — you care how technical decisions affect the customer experience and the business, not just code quality.

  • Strong collaboration and proactivity: you spot problems and opportunities early and move them forward.

  • Genuine interest in modern, AI-assisted development.

  • Strong written and spoken English.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field (or equivalent experience).

Nice to have:

  • Native iOS or Android experience (Swift/Kotlin).

  • Familiarity with the Expo / EAS ecosystem and over-the-air update workflows.

  • Experience setting up mobile practices, standards or platforms across multiple teams.

  • Experience in loyalty, e-commerce or other transaction-heavy, consumer-facing products.

  • Experience in an airline or another regulated, high-security domain.
