Job Description

We are seeking a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Research & Innovation team, driving the development of next-generation power conversion technologies for grid-scale energy systems. This role sits at the intersection of advanced R&D and practical application, delivering solutions from concept through prototype to product.

You will innovate across mechanical design, packaging, assembly, and cooling systems of power converters intended for grid applications while collaborating with global engineering teams in a fast-paced, high-tech environment. Roles and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of engineers, specialists, and technicians on advanced power converter design and hardware testing
  • Create 3D models of electromechanical components and assemblies
  • Support mechanical evaluation of power conversion systems, including alignment, cooling configuration, and instrumentation setup
  • Calculate, model, simulate complex multi-physics systems using state-of-the-art engineering practices and standards
  • Fabricate, assemble, and test mechanical components and subsystems for engineering prototypes and test fixtures for a wide variety of applications
  • Build lab-scale test setups, develop test procedures, and execute test plans
  • Independently troubleshoot and resolve technical mechanical issues
  • Uses judgment to make decisions or solve moderately complex tasks or problems within projects, product lines, markets, sales processes, campaigns or customers.
  • Takes new perspective on existing solutions. Uses technical experience and expertise for data analysis to support recommendations. Uses multiple internal and limited external sources outside of own function to arrive at decisions.
  • Acts as a resource in a the mechanical engineering domain for colleagues with less experience.
  • May lead small projects with moderate risks and resource requirements. Explains difficult or sensitive information; works to build consensus. Developing persuasion skills required to influence others on topics within field.
  • Adhere to all EHS guidelines and compliance policies
  • Travel to GE Vernova and customer sites as required

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree in a engineering field with a minimum of 1 year industry experience in design, development, testing, and validation of mechanical structure, enclosure, thermal management system for power converters
  • OR
  • Master’s degree in an Mechanical Engineering field with a minimum of 2 years of industry experience in design, development, testing, and validation of mechanical structure, enclosure, thermal management system for power converters
  • Experience designing test setups for prototyping and hardware characterization
  • Experience designing mechanical subsystems (busbars, structural supports, thermal management) across diverse applications
  • Proficiency with CAD software, 3D layout tools, and simulation tools such as Ansys, SolidWorks, etc
  • U.S. work authorization required (visa sponsorship not available for this position)
  • Location: Niskayuna, NY (on-site)
  • Must be 18 years or older.

Desired Characteristics

  • 2+ years in an R&D lab environment or equipment manufacturing
  • Experience with grid hardware such as power converters, drives, transformers, and other substation components design
  • Proven track record of delivering on schedule
  • Familiarity with ASTM standards
  • Knowledge of safety standards including LOTO, PPE requirements,
  • Strong communication and organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Adaptable and flexible in a global, cross-functional team environment

For candidates applying to a U.S. based position, the pay range for this position is between $89,300.00 and $148,700.00. The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas.
