Lead Mechanical Engineer - Data Center Design - NYC/Remote

Our client is a Leading Engineering Design and Commissioning Company that is a subject matter expert in the data center space. They will provide design coordination and construction administration, consulting and management support for the Data Center / Mission Critical Facilities Space with the mindset to provide reliability, energy efficiency, and sustainable design expertise when providing these consulting services for Enterprise, Colocation and Hyperscale Companies. This challenging and unique role will involve managing the design of Critical HVAC / Cooling / Mechanical Equipment for new data centers and expansions to existing data centers. The ideal candidate will have past experience designing mechanical systems specifically for large data centers. They will have experience and in-depth knowledge of heating and cooling load calculations, ductwork and piping sizing, selecting HVAC equipment, energy modeling and other engineering calculations. Our ideal candidate will lead and manage the design of critical and high-impact components of systems. Collaborate cross-functionally with multiple teams, ensuring consistency in architectural principles and promoting best practices. Identify and evaluate emerging technologies and trends, proposing innovative solutions to enhance applications. Drive continuous improvement initiatives, implementing processes and tools to enhance engineering efficiency. You will lead the design team in working / communicating with all the trades and stakeholders involved in all projects. Working and communicating with internal team and clients effectively is a must. Need to have come up the ranks as consulting engineer to be considered.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and Manage a portfolio of projects, create designs and plans, provide and gather specifications, and execute assignments in a multidisciplinary mechanical engineering design role for data center facility design projects
  • Lead the Mechanical Engineering efforts for the Mechanical Design Team from concept to construction, act as Engineer of Record on select assignments, and provide technical leadership and mentorship
  • Create Conceptual Designs gathered from meetings
  • Manage and work with the engineering team to create RFPs and RFIs
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, and client communications
  • Establish project objectives, policies, procedures and performance standards within boundaries of company policies ; Put these in clear concise work statement for the field
  • Review drawings and specifications, participate in equipment selection and provide input to the design team where needed. Provide ‘peer review’ as needed
  • Coordinate design work with architects, contractors, and multi-disciplinary teams
  • Mentor and train junior engineers; lead QC for deliverables
  • Develop guidelines and standards for operational processes. Provide input to the development of design standards

Qualifications:

  • 15 - 20 + years’ experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar engineering degree
  • Licensed PE / EIT a huge plus
  • Previous experience at an Engineering Consulting firm a MUST
  • Experience with hyperscale / colocation data center design, testing and commissioning
  • Must have experience managing a Mechanical Engineering design team
  • Proven ability to supervise and mentor staff, supporting long-term professional development and team performance
  • Strong leadership skills with a track record of delivering complex projects
  • Experience delivering projects from concept through construction administration and certificate of occupancy.
  • Experience working on complex data center/mission critical facilities design projects a must
  • In-depth knowledge of building and mechanical codes, standards, and best practices
  • Experience with Mechanical Systems (HVAC, CFD [Fluid Dynamics], Boilers, Chillers, Pumps, CRAC / CRAH Units, Air Handling Units, etc.)
  • Experience developing design/commissioning/operational standards and guidelines
  • Skilled at reviewing design drawings and equipment submittals
  • Client facing experience and at times serve as primary point of client contact on various projects
  • Prior track record in growing local client relationships or business development
  • Previous experience using: Revit MEP projects, AutoCAD MEP, Trane Trace a plus
  • MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams)
  • Experience in strategic planning, resource management, and cross-disciplinary collaboration
  • Self-Starter, self-motivated, and should prioritize well and have the ability to successfully work independently
  • Effective communicator - both oral and written form (tech and non-tech)
  • Proactive, resourceful, and a multitasker
  • Exceptional organizational skills with an attention to detail
  • Skilled in completing assignments accurately and in a timely manner
  • Previous experience in the Military / Military Veterans a huge plus! Especially those with electrical or mechanical backgrounds: Navy nukes - EMN, ETN, MMNs, Seabees; Army - Power Generation; Air Force – Power Production; Generator Techs; Maritime; Coast Guard; Army National Guard, etc.
