Fluence is seeking a highly motivated and analytically minded Lead Mechanical Design Engineer – CAD to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will lead the design and development of cutting-edge energy storage products with a strong focus on mechanical engineering excellence, design quality, cross-functional leadership, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop parametric 3D CAD models in PTC Creo for new enclosure designs, including engineering drawings, bills of materials, and technical specifications.
- Manage large assembly CAD data within PLM software and ensure design integrity.
- Design mechanical systems including sheet metal components, weldments, and standard elements.
- Apply DFX concepts to optimize parts for fabrication and manufacturing.
- Create and review detailed manufacturing drawings with strong GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis skills.
- Drive product development from concept through prototyping, final design, and manufacturing.
- Provide engineering feedback on design improvements, material selection, cost optimization, and problem resolution.
- Ensure compliance with international standards (ANSI/ISO/ASME).
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Program Management, Manufacturing Engineering, Supplier, Thermal and Structural Analysis ) to deliver successful large-scale energy storage projects.
- Present and defend design solutions to stakeholders, incorporating feedback into the design cycle.
- Lead, mentor, and guide a team of design engineers to deliver high-quality designs, 3D models, drawings, BOMs, and engineering documentation while driving accountability, collaboration, and technical excellence.
- Provide technical leadership in design reviews, risk assessments, quality checks, issue resolution, and design decision-making across multiple projects.
- Champion design quality by ensuring adherence to engineering standards, design verification practices, tolerance analysis, manufacturability requirements, and release readiness.
- Apply design thinking principles to understand customer needs, evaluate concepts, improve usability, and deliver robust engineering solutions.
- Support Agile project execution by participating in planning, prioritization, sprint reviews, issue tracking, and continuous improvement activities.
Candidate Profile
- Masters / Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical discipline.
- 8+ years of experience in Mechanical Design engineering, product development, or related engineering functions, with demonstrated experience leading design activities and technical teams.
- Expertise in Creo (8.0 or above) and AutoCAD.
- Strong ability to create, modify, and analyze 3D models and assemblies for functionality, Cost Optimization and manufacturability.
- Proven ability to perform and lead quality checks of 3D models, 2D drawings, BOMs, tolerance stack-ups, DFX requirements, and design release packages.
- Demonstrated experience in creating, maintaining, and managing comprehensive procedure and process documentation, including drafting clear workflows, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and guidelines that support organizational efficiency and compliance. Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure documentation is accurate, accessible, and regularly updated to reflect evolving business needs.
- Proficiency in Windchill PLM, BOM management, and product design control.
- Experience in Enclosure structures, cooling systems (air and liquid), and battery energy storage systems (BESS) is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of ISO and ASME Y14.5-2018 drafting standards.
- Strong experience in engineering quality processes, design reviews, drawing quality audits, corrective actions, design verification, retrospection, identifying and managing metrices for continuous improvement practices is highly desirable.
- Experience in model-based design (MBD), AI-driven automation, or Creo Toolkit is an added advantage.
- Knowledge of Design Thinking, Agile methodology, and structured problem-solving approaches is preferred; certifications from SAVE International, Six Sigma, and ASME (GD&T, DFM) are added advantages.
- Demonstrated leadership capability with experience guiding cross-functional teams, mentoring engineers, influencing stakeholders, and driving engineering decisions with ownership and accountability.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, identify project risks, improve design processes, and ensure timely delivery of high-quality engineering outputs.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly.
- Strategic mindset with strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
