JOB SUMMARY:

Roundtop Mountain Resort is seeking an experienced, safety-focused, and technically proficient Lead Lift Maintenance Technician to help lead the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all aerial and surface lift systems. This role combines hands-on technical maintenance with daily work coordination, mentoring, documentation, preventative maintenance planning, and cross-functional partnership across Mountain Operations, Lift Operations, Patrol, Fleet, Snow Surfaces, and resort leadership.

The Lead Lift Maintenance Technician serves as a senior technical resource for the Lift Maintenance team, helping set daily priorities, reinforce safe work practices, support operational readiness, reduce lift downtime, and build technician capability through coaching and hands-on training. This position is expected to model accountability, communication, and continuous improvement while supporting Roundtop’s year-round operating model, seasonal transitions, annual inspections, lift capital work, and guest experience priorities.

Role Focus Areas

• Safety-first lift maintenance execution and coaching
• Lift uptime, reliability, operational readiness, and guest throughput
• Preventative maintenance, inspections, work orders, and compliance documentation
• Lead-level technical troubleshooting across mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, braking, drive, ropeway, conveyor, and tower systems
• Seasonal ramp-up/tear-down, NDT, rope inspections, capital work, and failure analysis
• Team development, training, task ownership, and clear communication through MaintainX, Teams, and department meetings

Job Responsibilities:

Lift System Maintenance, Reliability, and Troubleshooting

• Lead, coordinate, and perform preventative, corrective, routine, emergency, and seasonal maintenance on chairlifts, conveyors, surface lifts, terminals, towers, and related ropeway infrastructure.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, braking, drive, tensioning, carrier, sheave, tower, and control-system issues that impact lift operation and reliability.
• Conduct operational checks, maintenance follow-up, repairs, and performance testing to support safe guest and employee use of all assigned lifts.
• Help minimize operational downtime by responding quickly to lift interruptions, weather-related challenges, breakdowns, and emergency maintenance needs

Lead-Level Technical Competencies

• Perform and lead work involving braking systems, bull wheels, bearings, liners, carriers, grips, sheave assemblies, towers, hydraulics, drive line systems, fasteners, precision measuring, prime movers, standby and evacuation power units, conveyor lifts, rigging, and related components.
• Apply advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic practices, including interpreting technical manuals, drawings, schematics, maintenance records, manufacturer guidance, work orders, and applicable safety requirements.
• Plan, direct, and safely execute rigging, component removal, component replacement, tower work, annual maintenance, inspections, and major repair activities.
• Identify when additional expertise, manufacturer support, engineering input, or vendor assistance is required.

Safety, Compliance, and Documentation

• Model and reinforce a safety-first culture consistent with Vail Resorts standards, Roundtop expectations, and applicable federal, state, local, ANSI B77.1, OSHA, and Pennsylvania requirements.
• Identify, communicate, and mitigate hazards related to terminals, towers, lift lines, drive equipment, stored energy, weather exposure, access roads, vehicles, tools, and work areas.
• Complete, review, and maintain accurate maintenance logs, inspection records, work orders, manuals, drawings, compliance documents, and documentation required for daily, weekly, monthly, bi-annual, annual, SPU, EPU, NDT, rope inspection, and seasonal work.
• Participate in lift evacuation training, emergency response exercises, safety meetings, incident review, and continuous improvement activities.

Team Leadership, Training, and Daily Execution

• Assign daily tasks, clarify priorities, monitor work progress, and support department accountability through a task-based leadership approach.
• Coach, mentor, and train entry-level and intermediate lift maintenance technicians through hands-on guidance, job-specific instruction, safe work demonstrations, and skill development conversations.
• Serve as a technical resource and informal lead for the Lift Maintenance team while supporting the department leader with scheduling, project planning, work prioritization, and follow-up.
• Communicate lift status, maintenance priorities, risks, staffing needs, parts needs, and follow-up items clearly during pre-shift meetings, ops calls, MOLT discussions, and Teams/MaintainX updates.

Seasonal Maintenance, Projects, and Operational Readiness

• Support Roundtop’s winter operating priorities include lift uptime, trail availability, safety readiness, guest throughput, and rapid response to lift-related issues.
• Lead and support spring, summer, and fall activities including annual lift requirements, NDT coordination, rope inspections, major maintenance execution, failure analysis, preventative maintenance, capital improvements, infrastructure upgrades, and seasonal transition planning.
• Assist with lift upgrades, retrofits, construction support, manufacturer-required repairs, and capital project work as assigned.
• Partner with Lift Experience, Patrol, Mountain Operations, Fleet, Snow Surfaces, Base Operations, and resort leadership to support year-round guest experience, event readiness, and operational continuity.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Support Fleet Maintenance operations during peak seasons, shutdown periods, and emergency maintenance events.
• Assist Fleet Maintenance Technicians with preventative maintenance inspections of Snow Groomers, heavy equipment, snowmobiles, fleet vehicles, UTV’s, and other related mountain infrastructure.
• Assist with troubleshooting hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems associated with Fleet equipment.
• Participate in cross-training initiatives between Lift Maintenance and Fleet Maintenance departments to improve operational flexibility and workforce development.
• Assist in maintaining compliance with applicable ANSI B77 standards, manufacturer recommendations, and company safety procedures when supporting fleet-related maintenance activities.
• Assist with annual and major fleet maintenance projects during seasonal shutdown periods.
• Perform fabrication, welding, machining, and custom repair solutions supporting both Lift and Fleet Maintenance operations.
• Provide technical expertise and mechanical support for large-scale off-season maintenance projects throughout the resort.

Job Requirements:

• 5+ years of hands-on ski lift maintenance, ropeway systems maintenance, industrial maintenance, mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, heavy equipment maintenance, or closely related experience preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to lead technical work, mentor technicians, support training, and coordinate work safely in a dynamic mountain operations environment.
• Deep understanding of lift systems, including drive assemblies, braking systems, hydraulics, towers, sheaves, grips, carriers, haul ropes, conveyors, standby/evacuation systems, controls, and documentation requirements.
• Ability to safely work at heights, on lift towers, around moving equipment, in confined or elevated areas, and in outdoor alpine conditions including cold, heat, wind, precipitation, and variable terrain.
• Must have or be able to obtain a valid U.S. driver license.
• Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks including climbing, kneeling, bending, standing, hiking, carrying tools, and working around heavy components.
• Available to work early mornings, weekends, holidays, nights, overtime, and emergency callouts as operational needs require.
• Strong communication, documentation, judgment, teamwork, accountability, and safety leadership skills.
• Intermediate ski or snowboard ability is preferred.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Prior lead, supervisory, field instructor, trainer, or department lead experience in lift maintenance or mountain operations.
• Experience with MaintainX, computerized maintenance management systems, inspection tracking, work order documentation, or similar maintenance platforms.
• Experience supporting NDT, rope inspections, load testing, lift evacuation exercises, annual inspections, and manufacturer-required maintenance programs.
• Experience with Vail Resorts safety standards, policies, operational tools, and mountain operations processes.
• Welding, fabrication, rigging, hydraulic troubleshooting, electrical troubleshooting, drivetrain, gearbox, braking, or heavy equipment experience.

The expected pay range is $25.45/hr - $33.93/hr. This is the pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors.
