Job Description

The Lead Lifeguard will assist in planning, supervising and implementing activities in the Aquatic Department and may be required to lifeguard and teach. Attendance at all in-service trainings required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise aquatic staff, including instructors and lifeguards as assigned
  • Hands on lifeguarding and assisting other aquatic instructional programs as assigned
  • Supervise swim instructors and monitor swim lessons
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the aquatics programs and facilities, including special events as directed by the Athletic Coordinator
  • Considerately and patiently enforce Red Shield rules to provide a safe environment for all members, visitors and employees
  • Caution swimmers regarding unsafe areas and actions
  • Maintain order in swimming areas
  • Develop and implement a Lifeguard Instructor program and assist in training and instruction of recommended Salvation Army Aquatic staff for Instructor-level Certifications
  • Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning
  • Provide first aid, rescue breathing and CPR when needed
  • Maintain and review records and reports as assigned
  • Inspect and supervise staff cleaning and maintenance of swimming pool areas, locker rooms, restrooms, trash cans, cleaning equipment, aquatic equipment storage areas, and other areas as assigned, as well as performing cleaning as needed.
  • See that Liability injuries are reported timely and according to procedure
  • Maintain a safe working environment
  • Report all harmful problems with facilities to the Program Manager
  • Other related duties as required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working with the public
  • Experience as a lifeguard and aquatic instructor (2 years required)
  • Experience as a swim instructor (preferred)
  • Experience as a lead lifeguard (1 year preferred)
  • Must have prior to start of employment unless otherwise noted and must maintain current certifications in the following:
    • American Red Cross Lifeguard certification
    • American Red Cross Lifeguard Management certification within nine months of hire
    • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification within nine months of hire
    • American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification to include AED
    • American Red Cross Oxygen Administration certification
    • American Red Cross Blood Borne Pathogens within 90 days of hire
  • Meet all health and safety regulations as defined by the Health Department as well as The Salvation Army.

  • Modern Office Equipment and Relevant Software

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must maintain minimum fitness level to be able to accomplish the following:
    • 500-yard swim in less than 15 minutes
    • Tread water for 2 minutes without the use of hands
  • Position requires proficient swimming ability and endurance. Must perform the proper application of rescue and first-aid techniques.
  • Ability to remain alert for long periods of time
  • Must be in good physical health, capable of meeting the demands of all aquatic’s areas
