Position Overview

The Lead Lane supports the Station Manager in overseeing daily station operations, ensuring compliance with company policies, state contractual requirements, quality standards, and safety regulations. This role provides frontline leadership, operational support, technical expertise, and customer service while assisting with vehicle inspections and station activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operations & Performance

  • Assist the Station Manager in coordinating daily station operations in accordance with company policies, procedures, and state contractual requirements.
  • Open and close the facility as assigned.
  • Manage station forms, supplies, inventories, parts, and calibration gases.
  • Support Lane Inspectors and Registration Clerks during daily operations.
  • Assist with vehicle inspections, tag renewals, customer interactions, and general lane operations as needed.
  • Monitor operational efficiency and support continuous improvement initiatives.

Leadership

  • Provide day-to-day leadership, guidance, and support to station employees.
  • Foster positive relationships with customers, employees, community members, and business partners.
  • Serve as acting Station Manager during absences, PTO, or training periods.
  • Promote a professional work environment that reflects company values and service excellence.
  • Support and enforce workplace safety programs to protect employees and customers.
  • Ensure compliance with quality standards, safety requirements, regulatory obligations, and operational procedures.

Vehicle Inspection & Technical Responsibilities

  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of vehicle inspection and emissions testing procedures.
  • Follow all Lane Inspector training requirements and operational guidelines.
  • Understand vehicle emissions control systems and perform accurate visual inspections.
  • Conduct waiver inspections and grant waivers in compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Ensure station personnel maintain all required certifications and qualifications.
  • Maintain working knowledge of inspection equipment, software, and related systems.
  • Perform first-level equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repairs.
  • Conduct routine equipment inspections and coordinate service or repair activities when necessary.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory or management experience with direct employee oversight.
  • Successful completion of all required certification programs.
  • Ability to pass required background checks conducted by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, twist, kneel, squat, reach, and maintain balance throughout the workday.
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate computer systems, testing equipment, and inspection devices.
  • Ability to perform light maintenance activities and safely handle equipment and supplies.
