Lead Lab Technician - Marshall, MN
This position is responsible for supporting the Plant QC Lab. May be responsible for final product review and release, documentation review (including chromatography) and special projects. Under limited supervision, conducts maintenance and calibrations on lab instruments. This role will cover micro-testing and other routine lab testing as needed. The individual must be competent in all labs and fill in as needed. Certifies lab technicians and provides guidance to Lab Techs and Shift Leadership regarding out-of-spec conditions.
Essential Job Functions

  • Supports the QC lab safety program and help facilitate ADM Safety initiatives.
  • Supports PE methodology in the lab.
  • Understands and continuously works towards learning all lab instruments.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots, PM and repairs laboratory equipment as needed.
  • Understands and continuously works towards learning all production processes in order to assist in providing recommendations to Operations to improve product quality.
  • Covers in the microbiology lab for weekends and microbiologist leaves.
  • Update SOPs as needed.
  • Maintains ongoing records of results and testing procedures by the use of SOPs.
  • Collects and sends out third party testing, PRS testing and report results.
  • Works closely with less experienced Lab Techs in the interest of training or problem solving.
  • May perform reasonably similar or related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • 2 or 4 year Science related degree (preferred)
  • Must be qualified as a Laboratory Technician I.
  • Complete all required safety training also follow and display knowledge of all safety procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Communicate effectively through speech and writing along with other mediums such as email.
  • Timely and accurate reporting of data.
  • Timely notification of out-of-spec results to Supervisors/Managers.
  • Must stay motivated and show initiative to complete tasks under limited supervision.
  • Display quality work through strong attention to detail.
  • Work with a team orientation by coordinating efforts with colleagues to complete tasks effectively.
  • Work overtime as necessary.
  • Ability to troubleshoot lab equipment (HPLC, elementars, Leco, etc.) preferred.
  • Have an understanding of aseptic technique.
  • Meet requests of supervision including but not limited to the essential functions listed.
  • Able to meet physical requirements and perform duties in working conditions listed below.
  • Utilize computers, basic hand tools, and all lab instruments for correct use.

Working Conditions

  • Rotating shift- average of 42 hours a week
  • Duties performed inside and outside
  • May be exposed to various temperatures and humid conditions
  • Atmosphere exposure: fumes, odors, and dust. All through working in process areas collecting samples
  • Hazard exposure: mechanical, electrical, and chemical.
  • Protective Clothing Required: Hardhat, earplugs, safety glasses, steel-toed shoes/ boots, and gloves. Safety glasses and steel toed shoes/ boots are required at all times in the lab. Additional PPE such as gloves, apron, face shield, goggles, etc. are required for certain lab duties as listed in individual lab SOP’s

Physical Requirements

  • Move or lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Position self to conduct work at various heights and positions.
  • Ability to ascend/ descend many flights of stairs or ladders.
  • Lifting may consist of: carrying syrup samples and similar material to the Lab for testing, carrying cases of chemicals from storage area to Lab (short distance), and carrying cases of retained samples to the storage area from the Lab (longer distance). May need to occasionally lift overhead.
  • Be on feet walking/ moving around over 60% of typical workday.
  • Speech, vision, smell, touch, and hearing all needed senses to communicate effectively, recognize process upsets, and identify possible safety threats.
  • Perform fine manipulation using hands through pipetting and working with lab equipment.

Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Hourly and salaried non-exempt employees will also be paid overtime pay when working qualifying overtime hours.
