Job Description

He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland Council’s Chief Finance Office has an opportunity for a Lead Financial Advisor to join the Local Board Financial Advisory team.

This is a critical role for council, focused on providing timely and commercially insightful financial governance advice to support value‑add decision‑making, performance delivery and strong financial stewardship.

You will be working on:

  • Providing strategic financial advice to local boards and senior stakeholders
  • Collaborating with finance teams and departments to deliver insightful analysis to identify savings, efficiencies and revenue opportunities
  • Preparing and presenting financial reports and strategic financial information
  • Supporting planning, budgeting, forecasting and performance reporting
  • Contributing to cross‑council initiatives and strategic planning processes

This role supports either four local boards, or three local boards alongside cross‑council projects and processes.

Please note this is a fixed term opportunity until May 2027.

He kōrero mōu: About you

This role requires experience operating as a senior finance or commercial advisor within large, complex and potentially political organisations. You are confident working with elected representatives, resilient under pressure, and able to translate complex financial information into clear, meaningful advice.

We will be looking for specific experience with the key role requirements:

  • Tertiary qualification in finance, commerce or business management
  • Professional registration with CA ANZ or a similar body
  • Significant senior‑level experience (10+ years) in commercial accounting or business advisory roles
  • Proven ability to present complex or sensitive financial advice to senior leaders or elected members
  • Strong experience in planning, budgeting, forecasting and performance management
