Java CoE - Lead Expert Engineer

Group Business Solutions (GBS) – Solution Engineering

The Group Business Solutions (GBS) division ensures the competitiveness of Euroclear by delivering reliable and sustainable IT solutions for the financial securities markets. Our technical teams deliver new IT solutions and improve existing applications for both our internal and external clients. We deploy changes into the production environment in a controlled and structured way that doesn't compromise production stability and we ensure applicative production support.

Within GBS, you will join the Solution Engineering team where you can play a key role in modernisation of the engineering practices for the IT divisions.

The Java Centre of Excellence (CoE) defines, promotes, and continuously improves the engineering standards, frameworks, and golden paths used to build backend services and business applications across Euroclear’s Java ecosystem.

The CoE provides:

• A clear, opinionated, end‑to‑end way of working for Java development, covering coding standards, architecture patterns, testing, CI/CD, observability, security, release processes, and best practices across the SDLC.
• A robust, modern, and supported Java framework, including reusable components, libraries, guidelines, platform governance, and engineering excellence standards for the Java community.

As a Lead Expert Engineer, you will contribute hands‑on to the CoE’s framework evolution, influence technical direction, and ensure our standards are practical, usable, and adopted across squads.

Your Role

As a Lead Expert Engineer within the Java CoE, you act as a senior hands-on technical expert who turns strategy into practical, reusable, high‑quality engineering solutions. You provide technical leadership, guide complex design decisions, and ensure alignment with CoE standards across squads. You support the CoE permanent members and the wider Java engineering community by driving the adoption of best practices, reusable patterns, the Java Chassis, and the Golden Path. You contribute directly to the CoE’s technical assets—including frameworks, libraries, training paths, and others—and help squads apply these assets effectively to deliver secure, scalable, and robust Java solutions across Euroclear. You will contribute the set up of the CoE.

Key responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Architectural Guidance

• Shape and evolve Java engineering standards, guidelines, and golden paths in collaboration with architects and engineering leads.
• Translate strategic engineering direction into actionable frameworks and patterns usable across multiple squads.
• Contribute hands‑on to the design and enhancement of reusable Java components, libraries, and platform capabilities.
• Provide technical evaluations and recommendations on feasibility, integration, security, performance, and robustness

Engineering Delivery & Solution Quality

• Ensure Java CoE standards are consistently applied across distributed, event-driven, and microservice-based architectures.
• Support teams in adopting Kafka-based integrations, containerised workloads, cloud readiness, and modern SDLC practices in a java context.
• Lead troubleshooting efforts on complex engineering issues and contribute to root-cause analysis and performance optimisation.
• Guide solution reviews to ensure compliance with engineering, architecture, and security standards.

Cross-Team Collaboration & Influence

• Work closely with architects, Expert Engineers, testing, cloud, security, and Product Owners to align engineering decisions across domains.
• Act as a trusted advisor to delivery squads, helping them interpret and apply Java CoE guidance effectively.
• Influence stakeholders by articulating trade-offs, risks, and technical reasoning clearly.
• Facilitate alignment across divisions, ensuring coherence of Java engineering practices at enterprise scale.

Community Leadership & Knowledge Sharing

• Contribute to shaping the Java engineering community, promoting best practices and shared learning.
• Run workshops, code clinics, and technical reviews to uplift engineering capability.
• Mentor senior and expert engineers, fostering professional growth and engineering craftsmanship.
• Encourage innovation and challenge existing approaches constructively.

Value Realisation & Continuous Improvement

• Identify improvement opportunities in frameworks, tools, and platforms used by Java teams.
• Prioritise CoE initiatives based on practicality, impact, and value to engineering productivity.
• Measure adoption and effectiveness of CoE assets, using KPIs such as code quality, reuse, performance, and stability.

Profile

Experience & Qualifications

• Extensive experience in IT delivery using agile methodologies
• Solid experience as a senior or lead expert engineer in Java-based environments
• Strong knowledge of Agile values and principles (Scrum Master certification is a plus).
• Proven experience leading technical decisions across multiple squads
• Strong engineering mindset and passion for modern software delivery
• Clear in communication and capable of building consensus across teams
• Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
• A willingness to learn and share knowledge.
• A results-oriented and can-do attitude
• A passion for innovation and technology
• Comfortable guiding decisions in ambiguous or fast-evolving contexts

• Fluent in English

Technical Expertise

You have deep hands‑on experience in:

• Core Java development (several years of industry experience) and common frameworks such as Spring Boot
• API design, microservices
• Object-Oriented design
• Event driven architecture and messaging technologies (Kafka, MQ…)
• CI/CD, automated testing, observability, performance engineering
• Containerisation and cloud‑ready architectures
• Secure coding practices and platform governance
• Experience of deploying and running Java on IBM Z-Series Mainframe is a plus
