Opportunity Snapshot

  • The Lead Engineer is accountable for providing senior engineering leadership across one to two squads within a single digital crew. The role leads the design, development, and operation of software systems while ensuring engineering standards are applied consistently within their squads and upheld through influence and governance across the wider crew.
  • This role partners closely with product and business stakeholders to deliver high quality outcomes at pace. It combines strong technical leadership with build-and-run ownership, ensuring systems are reliable, secure, observable, and cost-effective to operate. The Lead Engineer is accountable for accelerating modern engineering practices—including AI-enabled ways of working and shift-left approaches implemented with clear guardrails so squads can safely realise productivity gains and sustained business value.
  • Operating with a strong build-and-run mindset, the Lead Engineer is accountable for ensuring solutions and working practices support the long-term strategic architecture, reduce operational risk, and translate engineering capability into measurable outcomes such as improved delivery effectiveness, productivity uplift, reduced cost-to-serve, and improved reliability.

Qualifications and training

  • Tertiary qualifications in Information Technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 1 year of experience providing technical leadership, including managing direct reports, leading projects or programs of work from a technical perspective, or mentoring and coaching developers within squads.
  • At least 5 years’ experience designing, building, and supporting digital products and services using modern software engineering practices.
  • Demonstrated experience working with some or many of the following technologies and platforms:
  1. Modern web frameworks such as React, Next.js, Angular, Vue, or equivalent full‑stack
  2. JavaScript applications, with Next.js preferred
  3. NET web and API applications o Microsoft Azure cloud services (including App Services,
  4. containers, Kubernetes, managed SQL/NoSQL data services, and caching)
  5. Mobile application development in an enterprise environment (e.g. Xamarin, Kotlin, Swift)
  6. Headless CMS platforms and architectures
  • Experience applying testing frameworks and quality practices across the software lifecycle (e.g. unit, integration, and end-to-end testing).
  • Demonstrated experience with CI/CD systems and automated delivery pipelines, particularly Azure DevOps and/or GitHub/GitHub Actions.
  • Experience using application lifecycle, delivery, and documentation tools such as Azure DevOps Boards, Jira, and Confluence.
  • Demonstrated experience developing solutions using multitier architectures and modern design patterns, including Domain Driven Design and Clean Architecture.
  • Experience applying AI‑enabled engineering practices to improve developer productivity, delivery efficiency, quality, and operational outcomes.
  • Proven ability to contribute effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work creatively and pragmatically in complex technical environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to operate as a technical thought leader while remaining hands-on where required.
