Job Description

The Controls & Operability team is seeking a controls engineer with demonstrated wind turbine controls expertise. The operability lead engineer role is a global engineering role where the scope includes design, implementation, and validation of turbine control features that meet product safety, performance and grid compliance. The broad scope of responsibility includes leading the discussion around requirements, coming up with conceptual designs, conducting reviews with CTH’s to select the right design and then following up with implementation and validation. This role also requires the candidate to independently dive into field issues and provide resolutions to the same.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and enhancement of control algorithms that increase turbine performance, lower mechanical loading of the turbine, meet grid compliance requirements and at the same time allow the turbine to run with high availability.
  • Implement and validate control algorithms in both the loads simulation environment as well as on the GE MarkVIe PLC according to the product requirements flow-down
  • Independently Investigate and analyze complex controls issues occurring in the fleet of installed turbines and develop corrective actions.
  • Cooperate with the Loads and Validation teams to analyze the impact of the controls strategy on the mechanical loads of the turbine in simulation and through the evaluation of measurement data
  • Provide key wind turbine controls expertise through all phases of product development from requirements definition through design and development, validation and product life-cycle support
  • Effectively communicate and provide recommendations through the analysis, preparation and presentation of technical data to internal and external GE customers using reports, records, and letters
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the controller development and loads simulation infrastructure

  • In-depth understanding of Wind Turbine design processes and the Onshore Wind NPI process.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex/technical information orally and in writing
  • Problem analysis and resolution skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to succeed in a global team environment.
  • Advanced degree (MSc, PhD) with a focus on controls, wind energy, or system dynamics
  • Good understanding of classical (transfer functions, frequency domain design, etc) and modern (state-space, optimal control, etc) control theory
  • Experience with Model-Based design of control systems
  • Experience with state estimation techniques (e.g. EKF)
  • Proficiency in Matlab/Simulink or similar program
  • Experience with real-time control systems such as the GE MarkVIe
  • Ability to code in at least least one programming language such as C or Delphi
  • Wind turbine product knowledge
