Job Description

Lead Mechanical Designer – Power Transformers and Reactors

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Sr. Mechanical Designer to join our team at GE Vernova Vadodara (Large Transformer India).. The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of experience in designing power transformers, with expertise in internal connections design, internal layouts, tank and external designs, and customer drawings. A deep understanding of National and Internal standards such as IS, ISO, IEC, IEEE, and proficiency in 3D CAD tools like Inventor and Creo are essential for this role. Experience with design failure analysis tools (DFMEA), root cause analysis (RCA), and FEA tools like ANSYS will be highly beneficial. Additionally, the role requires occasional travel and fluency in English.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop internal connections, internal layouts, tank structures, and external components for power transformers, ensuring compliance with customer requirements and engineering standards.
  • Create and maintain accurate and detailed customer drawings, meeting various standards and regulations (Such as IS, ISO, IEC, IEEE, etc.).
  • Review and interpret customer specifications to develop robust design solutions that meet performance and safety standards.
  • Lead design reviews and collaborate with cross-functional teams to address design issues, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Apply DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) to identify potential failure modes and improve design robustness.
  • Conduct failure analysis using RCA (Root Cause Analysis) to resolve design-related issues effectively.
  • Utilize advanced 3D CAD tools (Inventor, Creo) to design, optimize, and iterate transformer components and systems.
  • Perform FEA (Finite Element Analysis) using tools like ANSYS to ensure the structural and thermal integrity of transformer designs.
  • Support manufacturing teams by providing design guidance, reviewing shop drawings, and assisting in the resolution of production challenges.
  • Ensure designs comply with all relevant industry standards and best practices, including but not limited to IS, ISO, IEC, IEEE.
  • Coordinate and support customer-facing activities, including design presentations, clarification of technical details, and addressing design-related queries.
  • Occasional travel to customer sites to offer technical expertise, assist with installation, testing, and troubleshooting.

Qualifications

  • Educational Requirements:
    • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Professional Experience:
    • At least 10 years of experience in transformer design, with strong expertise in internal connections, internal layouts, tank designs, and customer drawings.
  • Technical Expertise:
    • Extensive knowledge of internal standards (ISO, IEC, IEEE, etc.) and industry best practices in transformer design.
    • Proficiency in 3D CAD tools, particularly Autodesk Inventor and PTC Creo.
    • Strong experience with design failure analysis tools such as DFMEA, and failure investigation using RCA (Root Cause Analysis).
    • Familiarity with FEA tools, particularly ANSYS, for performing structural and thermal simulations.
    • Ability to develop and optimize designs in accordance with customer requirements and applicable regulations.
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across teams and interact with customers.
    • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
    • Willingness to travel as required for customer support and on-site design validation.
    • Familiarity with international & national EHS norms.
    • Familiarity with Lean concept i.e. Kaizens, 5S, problem solving tools etc.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with transformer manufacturing processes, including knowledge of quality control and testing.
  • Understanding of transformer operational performance, including electrical and thermal aspects.
  • Experience with international projects and the ability to work in multi-disciplinary, cross-cultural teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate complex design challenges and propose effective solutions.
