Job Description

At Downer, we're delivering some of Australia's most significant rail projects, and we're looking for a Lead Engineer – Mechanical to help drive the next generation of rolling stock solutions.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineer to take a leading technical role across complex projects, influencing design outcomes from concept through to delivery. Working alongside clients, suppliers, and multidisciplinary engineering teams, you'll ensure innovative, safe and reliable mechanical systems are developed to the highest standards.

About the Role

Reporting to the Engineering Team Lead / Manager – Mechanical, you'll provide technical leadership across multiple projects and bids, supporting the design, integration and assurance of rolling stock mechanical systems.

You'll be responsible for:

  • Leading the design, analysis and integration of rolling stock mechanical systems.
  • Developing engineering specifications, calculations, reports and technical documentation.
  • Defining requirements and creating reference designs for new and upgraded systems.
  • Ensuring designs comply with contractual, regulatory and engineering standards.
  • Supporting systems engineering, safety assurance and engineering change activities.
  • Collaborating with suppliers and manufacturing teams to deliver practical, cost-effective solutions.
  • Diagnosing and resolving technical issues across existing rolling stock fleets.
  • Driving continuous improvement and engineering innovation.

About You

You are a technically strong Mechanical Engineer who thrives on solving complex challenges and delivering high-quality outcomes in a project environment.

To be successful, you will have:

  • A degree in Mechanical, Aerospace or Mechatronic Engineering.
  • 8+ years' experience in rolling stock, rail, defence, aerospace or a similarly complex engineering industry.
  • Experience in systems engineering, safety assurance and engineering change management.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD systems.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant Australian and international engineering standards.
  • The ability to meet Rail Safety Worker requirements.
