Lead Electronic Technical Specialist

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Traffic Management Division is seeking a Lead Electronic Technical Specialist to guide our Freeway Operations Maintenance Team. This team is responsible for maintaining the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) that keep Utah moving. Core infrastructure includes state Express Lanes, ramp metering networks, wrong-way detection systems, and more than 900 Traffic Monitoring Stations (TMS) statewide.

About the Role

This role provides strong leadership opportunities as you supervise field technicians, manage day-to-day operations, and drive key modernizations, such as transitioning to electronic logbooks and deploying upgraded asset-management systems.

• Salary Range: $25.90 - $43.36

Key Responsibilities

• Team Leadership & Supervision: Guide day-to-day operations, delegate assignments, review work quality, build team schedules, provide technical training, and assist with performance evaluations, hiring, and disciplinary procedures.
• Maintenance & Asset Operations: Coordinate work order response times, manage inventory, inspect equipment for compliance and safety, track preventative maintenance schedules, and implement digital asset-management tools.
• Technical Maintenance & Systems Repair: Install, calibrate, fabricate, and repair specialized ITS hardware, power systems, and electronic components.
• Software & Hardware Configuration: Program and configure ramp meter controllers, vehicle detection sensors, Express Lanes field controllers, and related traffic equipment.
• Cross-Agency Collaboration: Coordinate work with project leaders, program managers, local maintenance units, external agencies, and vendors.
• Public & Stakeholder Liaison: Respond to incoming inquiries or operational complaints, explain policies, resolve issues, and document activities in official logs.

Qualifications

To qualify for the Lead Electronic Technical Specialist level, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

• Driver License: Valid driver's license.
• Experience & Education: At least two (2) years of relevant professional experience, formal technical education, or a combination of both.
• Professional Credentials: Hold at least one of the following credentials:
• International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level III Certification
• Traffic Inspection and Highway Lighting Certification
• Journeyman Electrician License
• Availability: Willingness and capability to perform on-call shifts and work outside standard business hours on a regular basis.

Underfill Option

Applicants who do not currently hold an any of the professional credentials listed above may be considered for an underfill as an Electronic Technical Specialist II.

Underfill Requirements:

• Valid driver's license.
• At least two (2) years of relevant professional experience or education.
• Current IMSA Level II Certification (must obtain IMSA Level III Certification within one year of hire).
• Willingness and capability to perform on-call shifts and work outside standard business hours.

Preferred Qualifications

Our ideal candidate is someone who possesses:

• Prior supervisory or team leadership experience.
• Practical familiarity with National Electrical Code (NEC) standards and IMSA guidelines.

Supplemental Information & Working Conditions

• Schedule Requirements: This role involves recurring night, weekend, and after-hours work.
• On-Call Status: Participation in the Unplanned On-Call Program for Traffic Signal, Freeway, Lighting, and ITS Maintenance is required.
• Travel: Position requires periodic in-state and out-of-state travel, which may include overnight or extended stays.
• Drug Testing: Requires a pre-employment drug screen and active participation in UDOT's random drug and alcohol testing program.
• Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
• Physical Demands: Requires recurring physical exertion, including standing, walking across rough terrain, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, and lifting items up to 50 lbs. for extended periods.
• Hazardous Operations & Environmental Risks: Involves working under unusual environmental stressors, including elevated work heights up to 100 feet, extreme outdoor weather conditions, active machinery, and electrical voltages up to 600V. Use of specialized safety equipment and strict adherence to protective protocols are required.
