  • Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane Location.
  • Hybrid working arrangement.
  • Key leadership opportunity!

Create better futures with responsible use of GenAI!

Join Westpac’s centralised DDAI team and help shape how Generative AI and advanced ML create real customer and colleague impact across the bank. You’ll build and deploy production-grade solutions end-to-end, influence best practice, and help grow a Data Science Centre of Excellence—setting the standard for responsible, scalable AI.

If you’re a seasoned Data Scientist who can translate ambiguity into measurable value, lead delivery, and bring others along on the journey—this is your seat at the table.

How will I help?

As a Lead Data Scientist in Group AI Services, you’ll work across the Business and Wealth Division to deliver high-quality, innovative, customer-centric data science outcomes. You’ll partner with stakeholders and technologists to shape requirements, develop models, deploy AI solutions, and showcase the value of data science—driving adoption and building data literacy.

You’ll also play a key role in strengthening our data science practices, standards, and ways of working, while helping scale GenAI capability across Westpac, specifically in the Business and Wealth Division.

What you’ll be doing (high impact, end-to-end) …

  • Build and deploy end-to-end ML and GenAI solutions (including LLMs / generative models) to solve complex business problems.
  • Lead projects from discovery through to delivery—improving ways of working and influencing team direction.
  • Partner closely with business and technology stakeholders to define requirements and deliver outcomes.
  • Communicate complex concepts clearly to increase understanding, trust, and adoption of AI
  • Contribute to best practices, standards, and guidelines that enable safe and consistent ML delivery.
  • Act as the technical Data Science Lead for GenAI and ML use cases across the Business and Wealth Division.
  • Mentor and guide junior team members and promote engineering-quality AI development and potentially manage a small team of Data Scientists
  • Stay current with emerging research and contribute to academic/industry publications where relevant.

What do I need? (Senior/Lead Capability)

We’re looking for depth, pragmatism, and leadership—someone who can build, ship, and uplift:

  • Significant experience delivering and deploying both ML and GenAI solutions with measurable outcomes.
  • Strong hands-on capability in deep learning / generative models (reinforcement learning experience desirable).
  • Solid experience with ML and Agentic frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, AutoGen, LangChain or LlamaIndex etc. and strong Python engineering
  • Expertise in one or more of: NLP / LLMs / GenAI, or Computer Vision; plus, tools such as Microsoft AI Services (e.g., audio-to-text, text mining, image recognition) and/or OpenAI capabilities.
  • Experience working with Azure platforms preferable.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement: you can translate business needs into robust, responsible solutions.
  • Demonstrated leadership—mentoring, guiding delivery, and lifting team practice.
