We're looking for a Lead Data Engineer to define the technical direction of our Azure data platform while remaining hands-on in engineering delivery. You'll drive platform architecture, establish engineering standards, mentor Data Engineers, and deliver scalable, governed, and AI-ready data products that enable trusted business insights.

What you will do

  • Platform architecture & technical standards

    • Define and evolve the enterprise data platform architecture and roadmap.

    • Establish Lakehouse standards, data contracts, engineering best practices, and architecture governance.

    • Make key technology decisions, document architectural decisions (ADRs), and lead design reviews.

  • Hands-on engineering delivery

    • Build reusable frameworks, reference implementations, and critical data pipelines.

    • Lead code reviews and promote engineering quality, maintainability, and performance.

    • Drive technical excellence through hands-on implementation and mentoring.

  • Data modelling & data product ownership

    • Design conceptual, logical, and physical data models.

    • Own the lifecycle of enterprise data products from design through retirement.

    • Define data product standards, certification levels, schema conventions, and Gold layer datasets.

  • Governance, compliance & AI/ML readiness

    • Establish data governance, metadata, lineage, and data contract standards.

    • Ensure compliance with security, privacy, and regulatory requirements.

    • Design data platform capabilities that support AI/ML and advanced analytics.

  • Technical leadership & collaboration

    • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to Data Engineers.

    • Partner with Systems Analysts and business stakeholders to deliver scalable solutions.

    • Foster engineering best practices and a culture of continuous improvement.

What you bring

Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or a related field (Master's preferred).

  • 8+ years of experience in Data Engineering, Data Architecture, or Analytics Engineering.

  • Proven experience designing and delivering enterprise-scale cloud data platforms.

  • Strong background leading technical architecture, engineering delivery, and implementation teams.

  • Experience working with data governance, compliance, and modern data product operating models.

Technical skills

  • Expert knowledge of Azure Databricks, Apache Spark, Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2, and Delta Lake.

  • Strong expertise in Medallion Architecture, data modelling, and enterprise data platform design.

  • Advanced Python and SQL skills.

  • Experience with Databricks Workflows, Databricks Asset Bundles, Azure DevOps, CI/CD, and Infrastructure as Code (Bicep or equivalent).

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Entra ID, Azure Key Vault, Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and data governance frameworks.
