Job Description

Job Title: Lead Cook

Location: Columbia, MO

Schedule: 40 hours, Mon - Fri

The Lead Cook, under the supervision of the Food Service Supervisor, prepares food on a large scale and follows established menus and USDA guidelines. They are responsible for ordering and storing food and paper products and ensuring proper labeling. They may need to make alternative meals to accommodate dietary restrictions.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Purchase food and necessary supplies within budgetary requirements.

  • Maintain compliance with all regulatory bodies (ie Health Department, KDHE, etc.)

  • Ensure staff evaluations are completed in a timely manner, Communicate well with staff.

  • Schedule staff for proper coverage,

  • Coordinate the daily menu by removing needed frozen meat from the freezer to be thawed, sliced, and ready for preparation.

  • Prepare food in such a manner that little or no waste occurs. The food should have a good appearance and taste. Leftovers should be used when possible and stored only for mandated timeframes.

  • Monitor food temperatures.

  • Clean equipment, dishes, and work areas.

  • Restock and clean the cafeteria area.

  • Report any faulty equipment or problems to the supervisor as soon as possible.

  • Communicate issues with coworkers to assist in delivery of services.

  • Maintain a pleasant attitude toward all clients

  • Demonstrate interest in long term and short-term goals and objectives of the company.

  • Other duties as assigned by Food Service Supervisor, Director, Vice President, or Executive Team members.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of food preparation and cooking methods on a large scale, as well as some knowledge of the materials and equipment used in such operations.

  • The ability to read and write simple correspondence, and the capability to follow security and safety regulations.

  • The ability to be adaptive, show initiative, be reliable, be motivated, be creative, and be cooperative.

  • The ability to read and interpret documents, write reports and correspondence, and communicate effectively with various groups is also necessary.

  • The ability to perform basic math operations and apply logic and understanding to carry out instructions is required.

  • The ability to handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Experience and Education Qualifications:

  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED.

  • Minimum of one year of employment history.

  • Basic understanding of nutrition is beneficial.

  • Must have a valid driver's license.

  • Successful completion of First Aid training is required.

Employment Requirements:

  • Successful completion of background check including criminal record, driving record, abuse/neglect and fingerprint check.

  • Completion of New Hire Orientation at the beginning of employment.

  • All training requirements including Relias at the beginning of employment and annually thereafter.

  • Current driver’s license, acceptable driving record and current auto insurance.

  • Successful completion of ServSafe Course.

  • Must provide evidence that incumbent is free of infectious and contagious disease, such as TB, prior to beginning employment and annually thereafter – expected for all direct care staff, but mandatory for RCF staff.

  • Obtained Hepatitis A vaccination prior to handling food products – required for all St. Louis area staff.

Physical Requirements:

ADA Consideration - Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (exists up the 1/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (exists 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, or pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Repetitive movements of hands, fingers, and arms for typing and/or writing during work shift.

Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
