Eaton’s ES AMER ARS division is currently seeking a Lead Controls Engineer - Power Electronics & Energy Storage. This position offers a HYBRID work schedule Monday--Friday 8:00am-5:00pm at our Moon Twp PA (Pittsburgh) Eaton facility.
As a Power Electronics & Energy Storage Controls Engineer you will develop and validate the control systems behind our grid-tied inverter, DC/DC conversion, and battery energy storage products. In this role you will own controls development from model-based design through simulation, hardware-in-the-loop validation, and hardware bring-up — translating system requirements into control algorithms that are proven in simulation and on real power stages.
You will work across controls, firmware, hardware, and systems engineering teams to build the modeling and validation infrastructure that our product programs depend on, including Simulink/PSCAD simulation workflows, HIL test benches, and automated test frameworks. This is a highly visible role for an engineer who wants both deep technical work in power electronics controls and the opportunity to shape engineering process and standards across a growing portfolio of energy transition products. This includes interfacing with commercial customers for requirements input and continued support for in-service operation.
The expected annual salary range for this role is $97000 - $143000 a year.
Please note the salary information shown above is a general guideline only. Salaries are based upon candidate skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.
Develop, tune, and validate control algorithms for power conversion products — grid-forming and grid-following inverters, DC/DC converters, and battery energy storage systems — using model-based design in MATLAB/Simulink.
Build and maintain plant and controls models in Simulink and PSCAD, including Simulink-to-PSCAD controls implementation, to support system studies, grid compliance analysis, and program design reviews.
Interface with key commercial customers to define system requirements.
Translate system-level and product requirements into control architecture, state machines, and protection/limit strategies; document design intent and design decisions.
Develop standard templates and architectures at various power/energy levels to accelerate project scalability and repeatablility.
Design, build, and operate hardware-in-the-loop test benches for controls validation ahead of hardware availability.
Develop and maintain automated test frameworks (Python or equivalent) that improve test coverage, execution speed, and requirements traceability across programs.
Execute lab validation on power hardware — converter bring-up, closed-loop performance characterization, fault and abnormal-condition testing — and drive resolution of issues found.
Partner with firmware, hardware, systems, and product engineering teams to close requirements, resolve interface issues, and support design reviews and gate milestones.
Support hardware teams with controls input on component selection, sensing, thermal, and EMC considerations where controls behavior is a factor.
Support certification and compliance efforts for grid-interconnection standards (e.g. IEEE 1547, UL 1741 SA/SB, UL3141) through simulation evidence and test data.
Support pre-compliance system validation techniques in conjunction with UL and other standards bodies.
Establish and maintain validation standards — documentation templates, repository structure, model and test-case conventions — so that test practice is repeatable and not dependent on individual knowledge.
Identify and lead process improvement initiatives (DMAIC / Lean Six Sigma) in modeling, validation, and engineering documentation.
Mentor junior engineers and interns; contribute to the technical knowledge base of the Energy Control Systems CoE.
This position reports to the System Engineering Manager, Energy Control Systems.
