Job Description

As a Lead Controls Engineer specializing in inverter-based solar and energy storage solutions, you will support the design, implementation, and validation of control systems for inverter products. In this role, you will work as a key technical contributor within the controls team, partnering with cross-functional teams to develop reliable and effective control solutions that support system performance, safety, and grid integration. This position is intended for an engineer with solid technical experience who can work independently on defined problems and contribute to broader team objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement control strategies for inverter-based solar and energy storage systems, including coordination with battery management systems (BMS), power conversion systems (PCS), and plant-level controls.
  • Support design, tuning, and testing of inverter control algorithms to meet performance, reliability, safety, and grid compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with systems, software, product, and field teams to clarify requirements and support successful integration of control solutions.
  • Perform verification and validation activities for controls functions using standard engineering tools.
  • Assist with product and project execution activities from development through commissioning, including troubleshooting and issue resolution.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation such as control logic descriptions, specifications, test procedures, and validation results.
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective actions for control-related issues identified during testing or field operation.
  • Work with experienced engineers to improve controls performance, development processes, and product quality.
  • Stay informed on applicable industry standards, grid requirements, and control technologies relevant to inverter-based systems.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field.
  • Minimum of 4–6 years of experience in control systems engineering, preferably in renewable energy, energy storage, inverter systems, or power systems.
  • Experience with inverter controls, power electronics, or grid-connected control systems.
  • Understanding of control algorithm development, system testing, and validation for inverter or energy storage applications.
  • Knowledge of power electronics, grid integration fundamentals, and communication protocols such as Modbus and IEC 61850.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with utility-scale solar or energy storage systems.
  • Familiarity with modeling and simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, or Python.
  • Familiarity with applicable industry standards and grid codes such as IEEE 1547, IEEE 2800, and UL 9540.
  • Awareness of cybersecurity considerations for control systems.
  • Experience supporting commissioning, troubleshooting, or field performance analysis.
