We are seeking a Lead Cloud Developer, an experienced software engineer, who will contribute to the solutions that keep our customers compliant with country e-invoicing and tax reporting mandates. Your role will be focused on building the country-specific capabilities that connect invoices, credit notes and purchase orders to government tax portals and clearance networks, using the latest technologies and AI-assisted ways of working to deliver large-scale, high-performance, enterprise-grade solutions. You will also provide technical leadership and mentoring to the team, helping to shape engineering practices and raise the bar on code quality and architectural decisions.

This is a hands-on technology role, ideal for candidates seeking opportunities to both build on their existing experience and research new knowledge areas, with a significant share of design and exploratory elements to their day-to-day tasks. Every country mandate brings a different set of rules, formats and deadlines, so no two modules look the same.

You will be working alongside engineers and developers from the Invoice Lifecycle Management (ILM) Teams, assisted by our AI Engineering team, and in integration with other Basware solutions. The product you will be contributing to is targeted at large, well-known enterprises.

Key responsibilities

• Own system design and software architecture decisions for country compliance modules, from new mandate onboarding through to production.

• Drive non-functional requirements: throughput and latency under load, secure handling of certificates, tokens and secrets, fault tolerance and graceful degradation against unreliable third-party government APIs.

• Lead code and design reviews and set the architectural conventions the team builds against.

• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers on design thinking, technical depth and code quality.

• Champion CI/CD, TDD and AI-assisted engineering practices across the team.

• Participate in incident response and drive root cause fixes for production issues.

• 10+ years of commercial software engineering experience, including prior technical leadership of a team or major module.

• Strong Java (17+) and Spring Boot expertise, with deep understanding of REST API design and implementation.

• Proven hands-on experience in the application of AI-assisted coding techniques, including structuring context and prompts, and critically reviewing AI-generated code for correctness and security.

• Experience with XML and XSD processing at scale, including secure parsing and schema validation frameworks.

• Hands-on experience with MongoDB (document design, indexing, performance tuning) or comparable NoSQL databases.

• Solid grasp of authentication and authorization patterns: OAuth2, JWT, API security, secrets management.

• Practical AWS cloud architecture experience across compute, storage, networking, IAM and observability, and designing for cloud-native deployment.

• Demonstrated system design and software architecture skills, able to design for scale, extensibility, and multi-tenant and multi-region variation.

• Strong CI/CD pipeline experience and Test-Driven Development as a working practice.

• Proven ability to mentor engineers on both technical depth and non-functional thinking across performance, security and resilience.

• Excellent communication skills, able to explain architectural trade-offs to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.

• Collaborative mindset, strong sense of ownership, comfortable adapting to shifting regulatory and business requirements.

Considered as a strong plus

• Familiarity with e-invoicing standards and networks such as Peppol and EN 16931, or with national clearance models such as Italy's SDI, Poland's KSeF or the French PPF and PDP model.

• Experience with digital signatures and certificates (X.509, XAdES) or secure token and credential handling.

• Microservices architecture design experience: service decomposition, inter-service contracts, resilience patterns such as circuit breakers and bulkheads.

• Experience with spec-driven AI development, where a written specification drives implementation and tests, and with AI agents and agent skills.

• Working knowledge of JavaScript for adjacent integration touchpoints.
