TITLE: Lead Campus Safety Officer

REPORTS TO: Safety Operations Manager

SCHEDULE: Full-Time, 40 hours per week. Hours may vary and may include overnights and weekends. This position is considered *essential personnel.

Wage Range: $29.75- $31.00 plus shift differential for nights, overnights and weekends. New hires will be placed inside the range based on related experience.

Position Purpose

Provides supervision for Campus Safety Officers while safety services assist the campus community in maintaining order and/or improving the personal safety of the students, faculty, staff and guests and ensures the security of Academy property. Assists with essential tasks and assignments and makes sure they are completed in a timely and professional manner.

Job Responsibilities as a First Line Supervisor

  • Supports the Safety Operations Manager (SOM) and Director of CSS & Risk Management (DCSS) by assisting with essential tasks and assignments and assures they are completed in a timely manner.
  • Creates, manages and updates the duty schedules for Campus Building Attendants (CBA) by working with Student Activities and the Transportation Coordinator on monthly building needs.
  • Oversees and updates databases to include, incident report binder, and monthly gym charges.
  • Manages the CSS property room.
  • Schedules and supervises daily activities of Campus Safety Officers and Campus Building Attendants and ensures that direct reports are conducting vigilant patrols and documenting activities.
  • Responds to inquiries and provides information on campus activities, organizations, and key personnel.
  • Completes monthly department billing to include gym rental charges.
  • Manages training for CSO and CBA to include:
    • Incident Report Binder
    • Fire Extinguisher Training
    • Mini Bus Training
  • Conducts monthly building inspections (CEP) and all fire extinguishers on a monthly basis to ensure readiness and compliance with state and local fire regulations.
  • Maintains a pleasant and professional rapport with Academy departments and personnel as well as with the Town of Exeter and other outside agencies.
  • Monitors Academy property for safety hazards and reports all violations or hazards.
  • May handle hazardous materials in the work area and will be required to wear personal protective equipment as appropriate for the work assigned.
  • Adheres to the established policies and guidelines of the Academy as well as the General Orders of the Office of Campus Safety Services.
  • Supports environmental sustainability initiatives and champions socially conscious behavior.
  • Maintain portable radio inventory for all academy owned radios. (added 7/24)
  • Is Responsible for assigning, documenting and completing monthly training for all members of CSS.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Responsibilities as a Full Time Campus Safety Officer

  • Investigate incidents and complete detailed, accurate reports both verbally and in writing.
  • Inspects all campus buildings, doors, gates, windows and points of entry to Academy property to ensure that unauthorized persons are not able to gain entry to the premises.
  • Assist faculty and administration in enforcing Academy safety rules, regulations and policies.
  • While operating the academy switchboard, direct calls to administrative/academic offices and locations or transfers callers to offices which can provide information.
  • When acting as the dispatcher maintaining a thorough daily log of activities and assorted reports for each assigned shift.

  • Knowledge of emergency management concepts and practices to include prevention/ mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.
  • General knowledge of federal and state codes and regulations relating to safety and security, fire codes and emergency management and compliance.
  • Knowledge of building/campus emergency procedures including but not limited to evacuations, fire drills, blue light phones, EPI and AED equipment and other life safety equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students by building trust and credibility.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills as well as a strong customer focus.
  • A strict adherence to confidential policies is required.
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Proficient in MS Office.
  • Willingness and ability to learn additional applications as needed.
  • High degree of organizational skills with the ability to be flexible and multi-task with accuracy.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions, maintain a professional demeanor and restraint at all times, including stressful situations.

Position Requirements

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate’s degree preferred.
  • Completion of CPR / AED and First Aid certification training within 60 days of employment.
  • Full Time staff must complete Campus Safety Training from Training Academy held annually.

Experience

  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Law Enforcement, First Responder, Military experience preferred but not essential.
  • Customer service experience desirable.
  • Experience in an institutional or campus setting preferred.
  • Experience working with adolescents in an educational setting preferred.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  1. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work and will require the ability to remain standing for extended periods of time, go up and down flights of steps, lift and push heavy objects as well as stoop, squat, bend, kneel, crouch, and lift.
  2. Ability to lift and transport up to 50lbs without assistance.
  3. Ability to withstand exposure to inclement weather (rain, snow, sleet, freezing temperatures, etc.).

Additional Requirements

  1. Successfully complete a criminal background check (reviewed every 5 years).
  2. Clean Driving record (reviewed annually).
  3. *Essential personnel are required to report to or remain at work if instructed directly by designated personnel during emergency events or inclement weather.
  4. Must consistently wear assigned uniform and equipment and adhere to the appearance guidelines.
  5. Must abide by all guidelines as listed in the general orders.
  6. Must complete Crowd Control training.
  7. Must complete an in-house field training program during the first 20 shifts.
