Lead Big Data Engineer.

Department: Technology

Reporting To: Maximilian Micallef

Key Responsibilities

Communication, organisation and alignment
  • Align your team with the product and technical objectives and to keep a healthy communication flow with the Head of Platform and other internal stakeholders
  • Support the business with providing clarity on deliverables tied with your team milestones
  • Provide constructive feedback to your team during 121s that are to be held monthly
  • Be responsible to assist your team with different career paths, that are aligned with the teams objectives that fall under GiG’s OKRs
  • Introduce processes, documentation where necessary to help your team be coordinated and for other internal stakeholders to easily access critical documentation
  • Work with other central teams to support the organisation strategy of GiG. These may involve Data DevOps, Architecture, Infrastructure teams etc.
  • Attend client facing meetings to elaborate on obstacles faced and to manage expectations keeping the leadership informed in case you require assistance.
  • To keep composure under pressure and to work against tight deadlines.
  • Delegation is key, and requesting support from other leaders when in need. We are a team and we share the burden.
  • Take caution with sensitive information.
Technical ability and awareness of the team
  • Continue to enable your team and support with assessing required training to continue up-skilling your team. Find the training necessary for your team.
  • Find the right balance between technical contribution and time to mentor your team.
  • Collaborate in technical talks in quarterly updates to the rest of the team, and encourage your team to contribute for recognition.
  • Participate in technical interviews, and request support from your team to find the best possible peers.
  • Contribute to incident management and be clear in communication to improve time to resolve. Be the person of contact to the Head of Platform to make sure any decisions involving risk mitigations are taken as early as possible.

Requirements


Leadership & Communication
  • Proven experience leading or managing a technical team, with the ability to align team efforts to product and business objectives
  • Strong communication skills, with experience managing relationships across multiple internal stakeholders and presenting in client-facing settings
  • Comfortable working under pressure and against tight deadlines while maintaining composure and clear communication
  • Experience running structured 1-2-1s and supporting team members with career development
  • Ability to delegate effectively and collaborate with peer leaders across functions (e.g. DevOps, Architecture, other Data teams)
  • High degree of discretion when handling sensitive or confidential information

Organisation & Process
  • Track record of introducing and maintaining processes and documentation that improve team coordination and cross-functional accessibility
  • Familiarity with OKR frameworks and the ability to cascade organisational goals into team-level milestones
  • Experience providing business stakeholders with clear, timely updates on deliverables and blockers

Technical
  • Solid hands-on background in big data engineering, with the ability to contribute technically while also mentoring others
  • Experience assessing skill gaps and sourcing relevant training to continuously upskill a technical team
  • Ability to lead or meaningfully contribute to incident management, including clear escalation and risk mitigation decisions
  • Experience participating in technical interviews and evaluating engineering candidates
  • Comfortable contributing to and facilitating technical knowledge-sharing sessions (e.g. quarterly updates, internal talks)
