Location: Hartford, CT – 3 Days Onsite

Client: Virtusa

Visa Type: H1B only

Rate: $60/hr C2C

About the Role

We are looking for a Lead Backend Engineer who can design and build production systems combining strong software engineering fundamentals with modern AI/ML tooling, specifically Agentic AI workflows and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.

Candidates do not need to come from a pure AI/ML background. Strong core engineering skills, architectural judgment, and the ability to integrate AI agents into production systems are key.

The engineer should be able to drive technical direction, lead design decisions, conduct design reviews, and mentor other engineers.

Must-Have Skills

  • Strong, production-grade Python experience as the primary programming language.
  • Strong relational database/SQL fundamentals, including schema design, query optimization, and data modeling.
  • Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) preferred; AWS is acceptable.
  • 5–7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Hands-on exposure to Agentic AI workflows and/or MCP servers.

Design & Architecture

  • Strong understanding of modular design, separation of concerns, bounded components/services, and low coupling/high cohesion.
  • Experience designing horizontally scalable systems, including stateless architecture, partitioning/sharding, load distribution, and avoiding single points of contention.
  • Strong understanding of SOLID, domain-driven boundaries, event-driven/async patterns, idempotency, caching strategies, and API versioning.
  • Ability to evaluate technical tradeoffs such as consistency vs. availability, latency vs. throughput, build vs. buy, and synchronous vs. asynchronous workflows.

Lead Responsibilities

  • Own technical direction for a workstream or service area.
  • Drive modular and horizontally scalable design decisions.
  • Lead design reviews and establish technical standards.
  • Mentor engineers on architecture and software design.
  • Drive adoption of Agentic AI / MCP patterns across the team.
  • Partner with product and architecture stakeholders on technical tradeoffs.

  • Candidate must be willing to work 3 days onsite in Hartford, CT.
  • Please prioritize candidates with strong hands-on backend engineering experience rather than profiles that are primarily AI/ML research focused.
  • Agentic AI/MCP experience is highly important, along with strong Python and architecture skills.
