Job Description

Ready to shape UK Retail’s target-state architecture and simplify our technology estate?

Why HSBC

HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world. Guided by our purpose of opening up a world of opportunity, our ambition is to become the world’s most trusted bank globally, putting customers at the heart of everything we do.

The Role

As Value Stream Lead Architect for UK Retail you’ll set the architecture direction across a diverse portfolio spanning seven sub value streams, from accounts and savings to secured and unsecured lending. You’ll chair the weekly UK Retail Technology Working Group and co-chair the Retail Design Authority with the Retail Business Architect, ensuring technology decisions align to Group strategies, standards and control requirements. Working with senior business and technology stakeholders, you’ll shape target-state enterprise architecture and transition roadmaps that enable safe delivery with control-by-design across security, resilience, privacy, records and auditability. A core focus is simplification - reducing duplication through platform-aligned reuse/build/buy choices and progressing application rationalisation and decommissioning. You’ll also modernise the architecture operating model for a codified and AI-enabled world so engineering teams can consume patterns and guardrails quickly and consistently. Success means clearer decisions, faster throughput and a simpler, safer technology landscape that supports UK Retail’s priorities.

What you'll be doing

  • Set the architecture direction for the UK Retail value stream across seven distinct sub value streams
  • Chair the weekly UK Retail Technology Working Group, setting technical strategy and priorities across the portfolio
  • Co-chair the Retail Design Authority with the Retail Business Architect, governing decisions against principles, standards, patterns and roadmaps
  • Define and govern target-state enterprise architecture and transition roadmaps with control-by-design across security, resilience, privacy, records and auditability
  • Shape technology transformation aligned to Group platform strategies, including data and integration platforms and a clear reuse/build/buy approach
  • Oversee application rationalisation and decommissioning plans to reduce complexity, cost and operational risk
  • Evolve the architecture operating model towards codified and AI-enabled practices, improving efficiency and decision throughput
  • Build and develop a virtual architecture team spanning Leeds, Sheffield, London, Pune and Hyderabad, strengthening collaboration across architecture and engineering

What we're looking for

  • Bring extensive senior enterprise architecture experience within large-scale, complex and internationally regulated organisations
  • Demonstrate ownership of architecture governance such as a Design Authority including principles, standards, patterns and exception or waiver management
  • Show proven delivery of technology transformation, including simplification, application rationalisation and adoption of shared platforms
  • Apply strong understanding of security, resilience, data privacy, records management and broader control requirements in architecture decisions
  • Influence and align senior business and technology stakeholders across multiple forums and teams
  • Create practical architecture outputs that delivery teams can consume, including reference architectures, transition states and clear guardrails
  • Build reusable assets such as golden paths, reference implementations, NFR patterns, integration patterns and data contracts where applicable
  • Develop architecture capability through coaching and team development across distributed and virtual teams

Architecture direction for UK Retail

If you want to shape how UK Retail modernises its technology estate this role gives you the remit to set direction and make decisions stick. You’ll work across sub value streams to simplify the application landscape and accelerate delivery through standards, patterns and platform-aligned roadmaps. You’ll also modernise how architecture operates, creating guardrails that engineering teams can use quickly with evidence captured in lightweight and automation-friendly ways. Apply to help build a safer, simpler and more reusable technology foundation for UK Retail.
