Job Description

Lawyer / Senior Lawyer – Lending, Westpac Institutional Bank legal

  • Opportunity to work within Westpac’s Institutional Bank
  • Sydney or Melbourne based – Hybrid Working Environment

How will I Help?

The IBCS Legal team is a collegiate corporate legal team providing high quality advice to Westpac Institutional Bank (“WIB”), a Division of Westpac Group. Through the partnership with key internal and external stakeholders this role will support the Westpac Group’s legal and risk strategy by influencing, negotiating and consulting. Our legal advice is accurate, timely, cost effective and commercial.

You will provide legal advice and support to WIB’s Institutional Banking & Capital Solutions (“IBCS”) Line of Business. Your primary focus will be on the real estate, health and energy, infrastructure & resources sectors in IBCS, but the demands of the business (and IBCS Legal’s response to that demand) may require you to support other IBCS Legal areas. These businesses provide finance solutions for Westpac’s institutional banking clients, including Australia’s largest corporates, financial institutions and Governments.

Key responsibilities in this role will require you to:

  • Independently advise, draft documents and assist in negotiation of transactions in compliance with laws, policies and requirements
  • Provide insight to IBCS business partners and guide implementation of external advice
  • Partner with the IBCS business in maintaining awareness of relevant regulatory requirements
  • Work closely with other IBCS Legal lawyers, Financial Markets (FM) Legal, Global Transaction Services (GTS) Legal and Westpac’s wider Legal & Secretariat function and other stakeholders to deliver high quality outcomes

This role will involve advising on a variety of banking transactions, lending and structured finance transactions but with a particular focus on supporting the IBCS real estate, health and energy, infrastructure & resources sectors. You will enjoy working with a highly respected Legal team, flexible work arrangements, and a great range of benefits.

What do I need?

To be successful you will have the following:

  • We’d expect you to have extensive and proven legal experience in a law firm or financial services organisation (6+ years PQE) across institutional lending, ideally across a range of sectors and with demonstrated expertise and competence
  • Experience in property finance would be beneficial but is not essential
  • You’ll have a growth mindset and a willingness to learn about other areas within the Bank
  • You will be proactive and well versed in understanding how businesses operate and applying your legal expertise and commercial judgement
