Responsive to the safety and security needs of a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students at a multi-campus college. To protect life and property and enforce laws of the Commonwealth, as well as the rules and regulations of the college within the appropriate jurisdictional confines. To protect and serve the campus community, ensuring that the Laurel Ridge Community College is a safe and desirable place to learn, work, and visit. Compensation

The hourly pay range for this position is $20.41-$27.55. The position is part-time and as such cannot exceed 29 hours per week and is not eligible for health or leave benefits. Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

  • Applicants must be Virginia DCJS certified law enforcement officers or previously Virginia DCJS certified officers who are eligible for recertification within 120 days, in accordance with Virginia DCJS reinstatement requirements. Former Virginia‑certified officers who have been out of law enforcement employment less than 24 months may be reinstated by completing 40 hours of law enforcement in‑service training within 120 days of hire.
  • Must maintain law enforcement officer certification to include completing the minimum in-service education requirements established by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).
  • Must be able to function mentally and physically under stress and in emergency situations.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess considerable knowledge of law enforcement, as well as security and safety concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
  • Must possess considerable knowledge of customer service practices and principles.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately handle agency-issued weapons and qualify annually in the use of agency-issued firearms in accordance with the minimum standards established by DCJS.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to operate a department motor vehicle safely.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to give clear oral and written instructions to elicit compliance with law, policies, and regulations in both routine and emergency situations.
  • Must be able to gather information and write factual reports.
  • Must be able to testify truthfully and factually in legal hearings and court.
  • Must never have been convicted of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude.
  • Must be willing to travel between multiple Laurel Ridge Community College locations and work various shifts.
  • Per VA Code § 15.2-1705 – must have a high school education or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age upon graduation from a basic law enforcement academy.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, and possess current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification or complete the training when assigned by the department.
  • Must successfully complete a background check and drug screen test

Additional Considerations

  • Proven academic excellence and subject matter knowledge, which may be evidenced by training and/or experience preferred.
  • Current or former DCJS General and/or Specialty Instructor Certification preferred.
  • Previous experience as a campus law enforcement officer preferred.

Operation of a State Vehicle Yes Supervises Employees No Required Travel

Travel as per any required duties of the position, such as to sites/campuses and any training. Ability to cover assignments throughout the college service region as necessary for the job is required.
