Under direct supervision, a Law Clerk in the City Attorney’s Office gets exposure to a wide range of legal topics, including municipal law, civil litigation, prosecution, contracts, torts, property, water, environmental, and constitutional law.

Must be available for 10–15 hours per week for the 2026–2027 academic year, with work beginning at the start of the school year. This is a hybrid position requiring regular in-person attendance at the City Attorney's Office, with some work from home.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts legal research on issues related to municipal law, including zoning, land use, contracts, public records, employment law, and regulatory compliance.
  • Drafts and reviews legal documents such as memoranda, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and correspondence.
  • Assists in preparing materials for city council meetings, board/commission hearings, and other public proceedings.
  • Supports attorneys in litigation matters by organizing case files, reviewing discovery materials, and summarizing documents.
  • Analyzes statutes, case law, and local ordinances to provide recommendations or summaries for attorneys and staff.
  • Observes court proceedings, administrative hearings, and public meetings when appropriate.
  • Collaborates with various municipal departments to gather information and ensure legal compliance in city operations.
  • Assists in municipal prosecution matters, including court observation, case preparation, and appearing at arraignments or dockets under attorney supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to conduct independent legal research using databases such as Westlaw or LexisNexis, and present findings clearly to attorneys and staff.
  • Ability to draft, review, and edit legal documents including memoranda, ordinances, resolutions, and contracts with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to analyze and apply statutes, case law, and local ordinances to real-world municipal scenarios.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, and work collaboratively with attorneys, court staff, and city departments.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, prioritize under deadline, and adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive legal information appropriately.
  • Ability to learn and use case and document management software, including Time Matters, OneDrive, and Smartsheets.
  • Must successfully pass a background check prior to the first day of work.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Completed second year of law school.
  • Current enrollment in an accredited law school located in the U.S.
  • Preference may be given for law students attending law school in Colorado.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical and Mental Effort: This position requires the ability to communicate effectively in person and by telephone, review and prepare written legal documents, and operate standard office and computer equipment. The role involves extended periods of computer use and requires the ability to work under deadline pressure, manage shifting priorities, and maintain focus in a professional office environment.
  • Work Environment: This position operates in a hybrid capacity, with regular weekly in-office work at the City Attorney's Office and some work from home. When working from home, the employee is responsible for maintaining a secure, quiet, and professional workspace and ensuring the confidentiality of legal materials. Regular in-person attendance is required per City policy.
  • Machines and Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including a computer, dual monitors, telephone, and multifunction peripherals (scanner, copier, printer).
