Lathe Operator (Manual Lathe / Shipyard)

Venture Dynamics is seeking an experienced Lathe Operator to support machining and fabrication operations within Navy and commercial ship repair environments in Norfolk, Virginia. This position is responsible for operating manual lathes to produce precision components used in maritime and industrial applications. The Lathe Operator will work closely with production and engineering teams to ensure all machined parts meet required specifications, tolerances, and production schedules. Assignments are project-based and may continue based on performance and contract demand.

Responsibilities


  • Set up and operate manual lathes to perform turning, boring, threading, drilling, and facing operations

  • Read and interpret blueprints, machining drawings, and work instructions to determine specifications and tolerances

  • Select and install tooling, cutting inserts, chucks, and attachments based on machining requirements

  • Measure and inspect finished parts using precision measuring instruments including micrometers, calipers, gauges, and indicators

  • Monitor machine operations and adjust feeds, speeds, and cutting depths to maintain product quality and efficiency

  • Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting on manual lathe equipment

  • Maintain accurate dimensional tolerances and quality standards throughout machining operations

  • Support shipyard production schedules by completing assigned machining tasks safely and efficiently

Requirements


  • Minimum of 5 years of experience operating manual lathes in a manufacturing, industrial, or shipyard environment

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, machining drawings, and technical specifications

  • Experience using precision measuring tools and inspection equipment

  • Strong understanding of machining processes, cutting tools, and material tolerances

  • Ability to safely operate manual machining equipment

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a production team

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work

  • Ability to obtain and maintain shipyard access credentials as required

Preferred Qualifications


  • Previous Navy, maritime, or ship repair industry experience

  • Experience machining large industrial or marine components

  • OSHA 10 Maritime certification

  • Experience working with steel, stainless steel, and other industrial-grade materials

  • Familiarity with shipyard safety and production environments

Additional Information

Work is performed aboard vessels, in dry docks, and in industrial shipyard environments supporting Navy and commercial repair operations. Duties may involve confined or elevated spaces and active production areas. Exposure to industrial noise and environmental conditions is expected. PPE is required in accordance with site safety policies, and respiratory protection may be required based on task or location. Work schedules may include overtime, nights, weekends, and variable shifts based on production needs.
