Job Description

About us

ERS is the UK's largest specialist motor insurer with an A+ rating. We recognise that for some, motor insurance is more than just a must-have; it's a way of taking care of what stands at the heart of their passion or livelihood. For those people, standard insurance isn't enough. That's why we work exclusively with motor insurance brokers to help get under the skin of the most difficult insurance risks, helping build products to meet their customer’s needs.

The role

We are seeking an experienced Motor Claims Large Loss Handler to manage a high-value and complex portfolio of motor claims, including sensitive and strategically significant matters.

You will take ownership of claims valued into the millions, ensuring accurate reserving, robust technical strategy, effective litigation management and fair customer outcomes — while maintaining strong control over indemnity spend and claims lifecycle, in line with the Company Claims Philosophy.

This is a senior, influential role offering regular interaction with underwriters, reinsurers, actuaries and legal partners. You will also play an active part in developing and embedding the use of data, automation and AI within the large loss claims environment, helping to enhance decision-making, reserving accuracy and claims outcomes.

Key responsibilities

  • Investigate and manage high‑value, complex and contentious motor claims, ensuring accurate liability decisions and cost‑effective settlements.
  • Interpret policy coverage and apply robust claims strategies to drive efficient resolution and optimise technical outcomes.
  • Maintain and proactively review accurate claim reserves, reflecting changes in liability, quantum and evidential developments.
  • Identify and pursue recovery, subrogation and contribution opportunities to minimise net claims spend.
  • Instruct, coordinate and oversee solicitors, counsel and expert partners, including participation in conferences, mediations and court proceedings.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring, acting as a referral point and supporting capability development across the claims function.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders such as Underwriters, Reinsurers, Actuaries and Operations to support informed decision‑making and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, legal and internal standards, while promoting company values and maintaining high levels of professionalism and customer focus.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Significant experience handling large loss motor PI claims, including complex liability and quantum.
  • Proven experience managing claims up to a value of One Million.
  • Strong understanding of pre- and post-litigation procedures.
  • Detailed knowledge of special and general damages, including high-value and catastrophic injury awards.
  • Working knowledge of CRU/NHS recovery processes.
  • Experience assessing past and future losses, including application of Ogden Tables.
  • Sound understanding of regulatory, compliance and statutory requirements.

Desirable behavioural attributes

  • Communication & Influence – Clear, confident communicator able to influence outcomes across stakeholders.
  • Driving Results – Proactive, accountable and outcome-focused.
  • Planning & Organisation – Strong prioritisation and portfolio management skills.
  • Problem Solving & Innovation – Analytical, pragmatic and solutions-driven.
  • Decision Making – Sound judgement under pressure.
  • Commercial Awareness – Strong understanding of financial impact, indemnity spend and market dynamics.

Benefits

  • Competitive Benchmarked Salary
  • 25 days holiday
  • Discretionary bonus scheme
  • Employee assistance programme
  • Annual holiday buy (up to 3 extra days)
  • Salary sacrifice benefits
  • Annual benefits reviews
  • The option for professional qualifications and study support
