GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
In this position, the Student Language Teacher will be responsible for learning the language, learning the preservation process, and creating resources. When necessary this position is responsible to being available for evening and/or weekend hours, irregular shifts and extended hours; as dictated by the education plans, in order to reach as many students as possible.This position will be responsible for the continual growth of their personal Munsee and/or Mohican language knowledge; working with the Language Manager and designated internal & external resources. This person will dedicate their working hours to learning language, history of the SM Community, creating resources, language research, and learning multiple methods of teaching.
STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS:
All employees of Stockbridge Munsee Community must meet the following qualification:
1.Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug and health screening.
2.Must be at least 18 years of age, unless otherwise stated on job description
3.Must maintain an acceptable departmental attendance record
4.Must be able to work weekends, nights and holidays
5.Must obtain and maintain Elder/Youth License as stated in the job description.
DUTIES:
1. Will be responsible for learning the language and attending all classes with participation.
2. Learn and create multiple media formats resources for online, hybrid, and traditional in-class.
3. Will create and record data in order to track the progress of the language program.
4. Will participate in language promotional activities, outside the classroom settings.
5. Will provide monthly status reports of language classes to supervisor.
6. Will work with appropriate computer software to accomplish relative objectives.
7. Will maintain strict department security, confidentiality, and quality to meet professional standards of the department.
8. Must demonstrate personal continued advancement of knowledge and understanding of the designated language.
9. In addition to designated language must be willing to learn and help in the teaching of Munsee or Mohican language, when called upon.
10. Must be able to travel, sometime for extended periods of time, to conduct language classes or continue self-development of language & teaching skills.
11. Required to attend job related, in-service, meetings, and training to maintain professional and technical knowledge.
12. Must adhere to tribal law and other applicable laws as well as tribal personnel policies and procedures.
13. May be required to satisfactorily complete an exam or other testing requirement(s) to determine skill proficiency.
14. QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must be an enrolled SMC member or descendant of the SMC member.
2. Must have a high school diploma/GED.
3. Knowledge of the Munsee and/or Mohican language is preferred.
4. Able to plan and organize project goals is required, and needs to have excellent organizational skills.
5. Excellent communication skills are required.Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in diverse and challenging situations.
6. Knowledge or familiar with the history and culture of Indigenous communities; Mohican and Munsee knowledge preferred.
7. Must be familiar with Microsoft software and must have keyboarding skills.
8. Ability and experience in establishing and maintaining a good working relationship with individuals of varying ages, social, and cultural backgrounds.
9. Ability to exercise independent judgment and work independently.
10. Must be able to travel for several weeks consecutively.
11. Must obtain and maintain coverage under the employer’s Employee Dishonesty policy.
12. Must submit and pass a background security check to meet the Elder/Youth License Requirement as it pertains to the position and the location of the department prior to and during the course of employment with the Stockbridge-Munsee Community.
13. Must pass pre-employment drug and health screening.Must adhere to the Tribe’s Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Policy during the course of employment.
14. Must have demonstrated ability to maintain satisfactory working record in any prior or current employment.
15. Must be able to meet physical requirements of position.
16. Must abide by departmental and organizational safety, testing, and uniform guidelines.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
1. This position requires a lot of sitting with occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
2. Evening and/or weekend is required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
3. Work environment requires excellent personal hygiene due to working in close proximity to others and in an enclosed area.
4. A Tuberculosis (TB) Screening and/or TB Skin Test may be required.
