Requirements

The Language Support Specialist is a hybrid role designed to support the academic development of the student body at Georgetown University in Qatar. This position combines the academic support responsibilities of a Language Specialist with the administrative and pedagogical oversight of Language Peer Tutors (Arabic and French) as well as general program support for the unit. The incumbent will work within the Office of Academic Services (OAS) to facilitate language learning, provide expert tutoring, and assist in the strategic delivery of language-related programming.

This is a term position (August–May) with a part-time schedule of 29 hours per week. As it is based in Doha, Qatar and offers no relocation assistance, GU-Q is looking for locally based candidates only. This is a non-sponsored position that requires all applicants to already have the necessary sponsorship to live and work in Qatar.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Support Language learners across beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels.
  • Mentor and train student language tutors (Arabic and French) on the fundamentals of tutoring and language support practices.
  • Assist in the design and delivery of workshops, seminars, and materials that promote engaged student learning, multilingualism and language proficiency.
  • Provide expert one-on-one tutoring sessions focusing on speaking, writing, and academic language skills.
  • Provide general and admin support for OAS programs.

Key Activities:

  • Assist students in their Arabic and French language development (writing and oral proficiency practice)
  • Hold standard office hours for one-on-one sessions focusing on speaking and writing exercises.
  • Facilitate targeted presentations, strategic mini-seminars, and interactive workshops on behalf of the center to bolster language learning acquisition on campus.
  • Create and curate language support resources, including high-utility reference handouts, instructional videos, and interactive learning presentations.
  • Deliver training and provide ongoing feedback to peer tutors for Arabic and French.
  • Support the Arabic peer tutoring program and other language support initiatives within OAS.
  • Assist in creating support materials such as handouts, videos, and presentations for use in language tutoring.
  • Assist with regular administrative tasks, special projects, and strategic planning for student success.
  • Prepare professional, visually compelling presentations and data review materials for internal and steering committee meetings.
  • Manage the precise scheduling, continuous planning, and field execution of structural departmental events, including special guest visits and collaborative academic initiatives.
  • Coordinate with internal and external community stakeholders to publicize OAS programming, recruit participants, and build a cohesive network of learning practice.
  • Manage and organize program-related physical and digital documentation, maintaining stringent accuracy, version control, and data confidentiality.


Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong understanding of language acquisition and writing pedagogy.
  • Effective professional communication skills in English, French and Arabic to interact with the campus community.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multicultural setting.
  • Competency with Google Suite, MS Office, and LMS platforms.
  • Interest and ability to master other technologies used in the language programs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Master’s Degree (completed or in progress) in Arabic Language and Literature, Arabic Applied Linguistics, French, TESOL, Education, or a related field.

Experience:

  • 2+ years of relevant experience teaching university-level Modern Standard Arabic or working in a language/writing center at a postsecondary institution.
  • Proven experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse students and writers.
